When a 76 is a good score............
I had the USGA Public Links Qualifier today at St Johns Golf & Country Club in St Augustine Florida. I had been playing some good golf lately and felt I had a good shot at making it.
We started on #10 and I made a Triple Bogey. No need to explain, just butchered it. I figured it was nerves, but I seemed to have a case of the rights all day. So I par the next hole and move to a par 3 that they had WAY up. I hit 9 iron just past the pin and sucked it back to 2 inches. The next hole I proceeded to hit it right again into the hazard.
Rest of the day was boring, but I finished with a 76. The reason I said it was good because.......I only hit 9 greens all day. I triple bogeyed the first hole, without taking a penalty. I had 3 penalty shots, including the last hole that I ended up getting up & down for par. I was about 170 out and had a 12 footer for par.
So i made the cut on the number. There were four 68's. The thing that i'm looking at now is that I need the experience. I've been playing some good golf, including a 2nd in a big tourney three weeks ago. I'm just lacking the experience. It has been over 5 years since I really played competitive golf and I"m trying to come back from a broken bone in my knee last year. The pins are really nasty for tomorrow, so hopefully i can just put a good number down.
