range vs. course

i am still brand new to golf, in fact i've only played 4-5 full rounds of golf. I am working on hitting my driver cause i can't hit the driver, i normally hit a 5i from the tee, which most times works out for me. I need to work on all aspects of my game but right now i am doing some driver work.

So last night i was hitting the driver after reading and watching some tips, it was working out ok, then i mixxed it up a little hitting some irons and stuff. I felt like i ****ed and for the most part couldn't hit anything good, but it seems when i am on the course i don't have the same problems that i do when i am at the range. I don't know if it's cause i am more focused on the course or if the problems seem more like a problem cause i am hitting one ball after another and so many versus the course where you take breaks in between each shot. Does this make any sense??

Also, i do triathlons, when i go out for a training swim/bike/run i always like to have a "plan" so i can get the most from my training. do you guys have a "plan" when going to the range???

Thanks in advance

I always have a plan at the range...never go just to whack a few with each club unless it's a pre round warmup...

In fact, I narrow things down to just one or two things that I'm working on...getting the swing bottom in front of the ball for short irons might constitute one range session, position at the top for woods another, working on a shot shape a third...but never go and just whack balls...

As far as your on course performance is concerned vs. your range time...just be happy about that...so many have it the other way around...

Re: range vs. course

May I recommend a little reading for you. Many years ago when I started playing I was guided by two books from Tommy Armour, Sr., arguably the greatest teacher of the last century. They were basic and very practical, but covered golf rather well between them. The first was, "How To Play Your Best Golf All the Time," and "How To break 100 in 90 Days." You may have to order them from your local bookstore or go on the web, but they would be well worth the effort. It took me 210 days (7 months) to break 100, but I was 8 years old then. The 'Best Golf' book is a fine series of lessons from the Silver Scot, which includes a lot of range and practice work. It is meant to be read with a golf club in your hand, per his introduction. I believe you could benefit from having his insights. I still review it a time or two a year after having read it first in the 1940's.

I know that is true for me. I cannot seem to motivate myself for a range shot, like I can for an on-course shot. Consider yourself fortunate! When I saw just the title of the thread I was guessing, incorrectly, that you were hitting it great on the range but couldn't bring it to the course.

You should take your time on the range, setting up each shot fresh. One shot per minute seems like a reasonable pace to me, but I have seen some great golfers, that seem to take just one shot every two minutes. On the other hand, I have never witnessed a good golfer machine-gunning shots. If you rake 'em over with your club, without getting out of your golf-stance and/or posture, hitting one after the other, you are likely to get too tired, stiff or tense.... It won't hurt to change clubs and targets a bit either.
