Does Tempo really matter?

I have been golfing for a little while now, not doing so great. My friend told me I have really bad tempo, like each swing I take is inconsistent, time wise. How important really is tempo? what can i do to improve my tempo? should I try a device? should i watch videos?

Re: Does Tempo really matter?

The thing about tempo is, with good tempo you can find a repeatable swing. Changing tempo every time, means a different swing every time. No consistency at all.

Try a slow 1-2-3 count. . .1=takeaway, 2=top of backswing, 3=swing and follow thru

Re: Does Tempo really matter?

Good tempo is a lofty goal that we all seek. I still try to find it every time I play. And I have been playing a long, long time. LottaBalata is right on about a dependable, repeatable swing. Lee Trevino had a swing that would make parents cover their kids' eyes rather than have them see it. But, it worked beautifully for Lee and it was repeatable, so he could depend on the same results time after time. Additionally, good tempo allows you to use less effort in your swing than when your tempo is off. This means you have strength in reserve and after getting the "feel" of a good tempo, you'll be able to use your strength more effectively. This will also help protect you from injury, since you'll be less likely to overswing.

Re: Does Tempo really matter?

I have suffered from bad tempo for quite a while. I have had a terrible slice, Sometimes, other times dead straight, maybe slight fade. Then as I have been playing I have gone further and further right. Problem has been on every lesson I have been hitting dead straight/ Slight fade...... Luckily my coach spotted me. Called me in for another lesson.
what I was doing was starting my downswing before I had finished my back swing. this is also known as "not connected" your tempo is all over the place and at impact my shoulders are not in line with the target.
the cure dead simple a slight pause at the top of my swing and a little saying to delay my downswing i.e. "Here's Johnnie". result, consistent swing, dead straight., dead happy.
So to answer the question "YES".

hope this helps.

Re: Does Tempo really matter?

Good tempo won't improve a bad swing but Bad Tempo certainly will make it worse.

Re: Does Tempo really matter?

I have used a metronome designed for golfers. My tempo is 64bpm. I have found my tempo also is the same for Driver, Wooods, Irons (all swings) and putter. Seems to have cured a lot of my over quickness and yipps with the putter. Worth a looksee?
