Hello, I just started playing golf about 4 or 5 months ago. first time playing i shot a 120, then 111,105,107,91,95. i walked 32 for the 91 and 95. Feel like everything is coming together all around especially my tee shot and short game. I know i have a text book swing, was taught how to swing when i was about 5 or 6, (not play). My grandpa (who shoots high 70s and low 80s) has taught me the swing throughout the years of my life when i would catch him out in the yard swinging the club. I am now 23, i can drive 200-225 yeards aver. and getting very confident everytime i tee up. But 20 bucks or more a game destroys my wallet. My question, is it worth my time and money to continue to become a great golfer, or should i just make this a 1 time a month thing to have fun with the guys. i really have no doubt that by the end of this year 2009 i can hit 70s. Any comments on this would be great. Also i aint trying to brag or anything i am just stating facts and im looking for opinions. Thanks Bogey1
Welcome to GR. You are off to a rocking start. Each step you take, braking 90 consistently,
breaking 80 consistently are quantum leaps. I think striving to get better is one of the charms of golf for those who are hooked on it like most of us here are.
You have to decide yourself what your goals are. If you want to be the best you possibly can be, it takes a great deal of effort, time, and yes money too.
At your stage of development, getting your swing tight is more important than scoring. The scoring will come with the swing. The best way to keep them out of your wallet is to keep everything out of your head except that swing, through the ball to a good finish.
Never give up. You are already showings small signs of improvement - you are getting the ball to the hole quicker. Why stop now?

All depends what you want to do and what your goals are in the game...sounds like you are off to a good start...
...to get to the 70s regardless of your talent is going to take a big time commitment and a heck of alot of $20 dollar rounds...anyone I know that has made that commitment does it because they have no choice and have become entangled in the love/hate/addiction that is golf...if you are still casually considering it based on scoring goals it isn't in you yet...but it could be...
Well an update, shot a 99 and a 90 last 2 times out. Did some work on my chip shot which was killin my score. Also been improving on fairway shots, had been haveing a hard time hittin with a wood. Far as teeing off, man i ripped one on a par 4 the other day and landed about 50 yards from the green. Me and my buddies measured the distance and it was 300 yards exact. Man that just felt awesome to hit the ball that far. Im just havin a blast with golf, i also found a place that lets me play for 8 dollars to walk all day and $5 after 5pm. The place is only 1 miles from my new job so im out there about 5-6 days a week.
It sounds like you are having a great time and have caught the bug that has gotten to all of us. The way to improve is to put as much time in practicing as playing. Not to ruin your parade, but to say that I believe you will get to 70 this year will be a very large stretch. There are people that have been playing their entire lives that haven't reached that. Then again, why not set the bar high?
yeah razz11, 70s is a big hill to climb. I really enjoy the game though and just going to strive to be better. your right about practicing while you play it really helps and works better than the driving range. Well i shot a 94 the other day. I hit 44 on the front 9, and the with the last 4 wholes i doubled.ended up with a big ol 50. But oh well it was fun. My putting cost me big time, for ex. i was on the green puttin for birdie on 16, then all of a sudden im puttin a double bougie in. go figure.
regardless of how well you end up playing its all about having fun. Also speaking from the stand point of a diabetic I can tell you that the game is a major + when it comes to keeping you healthy. I see men in their 80's still playing out there. Now you really just have to make your self some reachable goals and strive for them while still keeping a good outlook on it all.
still breaking barriers, when out this week, on Sun. shot a 93 in the rain. Then yesterday, shot my best of 86. Prob going to take some weeks off now for strength training and practice. So excited about the game, only been playin for about 8 months now and things are really coming together.
A key to scoring that many new golfers miss is the short game. You'll use more strokes within 50 yards of the hole than from outside it. I always spend the same amount of time on/around the practice green as I do on the range with the longer shots.
yeah i agree about that one. MOst of my practice now consist of chippin and putting. Prob what has helped lately in getting better scores. Friend told me one day, Its not how you drive its how you arrive. I like that saying and its so true
Your potential cant be told by others. Just keep working on the short game more than anything else. I always told myself, if I got good short game, I can make PAR everytime.

An older friend of mine used to say, "drive for show and putt for dow" also a fun saying. I think he liked it cuz I outdrove him by about 60 yards a hole. lol.
