1. Played a smaller driver (the 400cc IS my smaller driver) with a shorter shaft and took moderately fast but non-killer swings. I hit about 10 fairways. The others weren't far off.
2. Took my 3 wood out of my bag so that I wouldn't be tempted to hit the par 5's in 2 with it. My approaches on the par 5s were an easy pitch or chip.
3. Teed up my irons on the par 3s. I feel manly when I hit it off the deck, but I had more birdie putts than I have in a long time.
4. Swung easy and let the longer club do the work. Why muscle a 9i when there are other clubs in the bag?
I had rounds in the high 90s last month. Today, I shot an 88 AND I had more fun.
I know it's not q-school material, but that was a completely enjoyable round of golf.
Oh, and I looked super-dapper in Ashworth shorts, a Slazenger shirt, Etonic dri-lites and a Top-Flite hat. I'm sure that had something to do with it, too.

When you dress good, you play good - that's my motto no how ugly my mug is - that I can't change! Keep this up and you'll be posting on how you broke 80. Your attitude is play within yourself - best advice anyone can get.
Interesting. You took your 3 wood out of the bag... so what were you hitting off the tee if you needed accuracy or a certain distance? 5 wood?
Great to hear that your having more fun, golf really does **** when you are not playing well
hope you keep playing well.

Reason: inappropriate language
how many putts did you take in that round? i'm guessing not a lot...
it's good to hear about your success! I can honestly say i might do several of the things you listed...

Thanks. Really, my 3 wood is an iffy club for me. I've been using a 4 wood and an 18degree hybrid instead of the 3 and 5 woods and it's working like a charm. Plus, I'm a little more Pavin than Daly, you know? I don't remember exactly how many putts, but there were only 2 3-putts that I can recall.
I can't tell you guys how nice it is to have a place to share this stuff.

That's why Victory started this place. Good discussions, no flame wars.
Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd just post this here.
I played an impromtu round at the local 9-hole short course. I shot my firstEagle today. Not only that, but I had a witness. Here's the setup. Short par 4 over a big drainage ditch with a dogleg right. Out comes the driver. I hit a low shot and got it fade enough that it bounced twice and dribbled to 6 feet short of the hole. Dropped the putt, and was done. Add the 3 birds that I had and it was the best I've ever played this nasty little course. Without jinxing it, I'm really starting to feel like a golfer and not so much of a hacker.

Whoa, baby, Ted! Congrats! I've really been interested in your game-management posts. Obviously your approach is working for you! Keep us updated on your progress!

Right on dblbassted, well done. Can I ask how long that took (to feel like a golfer)? I'm still pretty much in the hacker phase, wondering how long that can last.

Let's see, I played maybe 2 dozen rounds in high school/college and quit. I started up again just before Easter this year, so however long that is. Granted, I'm playing 3-4 rounds a week and taking lessons regularly from a pro.
Ah. At that rate, I'll have a couple of years before I feel like a golfer! (been visiting a driving range or a 3-par once a week... for about 6 months)
