Ever been in a slump?

Have you ever been in a slump where you just cant to anything right? Its currently happening to meeh. I just changed my swing (shortend the backswing and followthrough) and it worked great for a while but know I got no accuracy with my irons at all and my driver I hit it so high every time it only goes maby 120yards. My handycap went from 6 to 10 in the last month. Isent this game so cruel?

Take a break for a period of time. Then go back to the basics. Grip, posture, tempo. Don't over practice, and perhaps get some help from a pro.

I've been slumping for the past 2 months or so. I've had the same problem as you. I've been popping drives up here and there. My slice also reappears on occassion. My slip has been worse. I was as high as an 8 handicap last year but now I'm playing bogey golf.

I THINK I'm currently coming out of my slump, though. What killed me was driving accuracy and consistency. What has helped me is going to what worked in the past. Like you, I tried some swing changes for more distance but I believe this is what caused my swing to go bad. I've also shortened my swing and am trying to swing with better tempo.

Bad Habits

Bad habits return so easily which cause me to slump. Trying to hit the irons too hard vs. taking an extra club, forgetting to "swing the head" with my driver vs. trying to club it.

I find slumps are getting harder and harder to get out of as I get older. The bad habits just feel so natural!

I almost quit golf a couple of years ago due to so many bad shots. I grinded over the winter, with a lot of lessons, practice, and playing in bad conditions, as well as alot of short game practice.

IN the spring, I found myself really enjoying scrambling on the course, and striking the ball better. It was a little tiring playing that much over a cold winter, but it did make me feel like Rocky Balboa. (in the movie where he went to Russia to work out in the old farmhouse!)

i was in a slump for approximately 1 hour once... i was at the driving range duffing every shot w/ my driver and chunking my irons... then said "**** it" and just threw my driver down and surrendered to the golf gods wishes :(... then i just rememebered my fundamentals and started hitting the ball fine... ever since then i've written down everything in know is important in my swing for driving, approach shots, putting, etc, and put it in my bag... when i need to cool down i just look at the list and remember how stupid it is to get upset over a game as stupid as golf.

I have golfed, therefore I have slumped.

I have found two things that will break a slump:

1) Take a break from golfing.

2) Take some lessons from a local pro.

If you really love the game and have a little extra time and money, then #2 would be the better option. The local private club around here offers lessons to the public for ~$120 for three lessons - not too bad when you consider how much a typical round of 18 costs at a decent course.

Good advice and a good price. That's only $40.00/hr.

I definatly understand how you feel. 2 years ago my slump got so bad that I was on the brink of just quitting. After basically reaching rock bottom I took a few weeks off just to get away. Since then with tons of practice, new irons 3 deg's more upright then my original set and a new driver, with higher loft, I have been able to bring my handicap from a 15 2 years ago to a 6 now. Just keep working away

Hasn't everybody?

Once, I posted 5 straight rounds over 110. For a (at the time) 29 handicap, that's no good.
