Having seen various references to League golf on this forum, I was wondering what it is? Here we have Inter-Club competions for varying grades (Woodward, Metropolitan, Presidents etc etc), which involes match play teams going against other clubs teams, is league golf along those lines?
Yes it is, we have a moderator here who goes by the handle of leaguegolf, he is very passionate about his league. League will give you advice on the subject, all you have to do is ask. But then, he will read this thread sometime soon and post to it. He has helped me start one down where I live.
It began about 25 yrs. ago. We all worked for the same company and formed a golf league. At first it was simply individuals playing against each other in match-play format. Over time it has eveolved into a two-person team format, and is not restricted to a specific company or employer. Many of us have played in the league since its inception.
We use a combination of individual match play, and team stroke play to determine the outcome of each match. 2 pts. for low handicap players match, 2pts. for higher handicap players match, and 2 pts. for total team score. We keep individual handicaps throughout the year which are used for the matches.
Playing in a golf league can be great fun, combining golf with good fellowship. The league that I played in had a weekly weeknight 9-hole match-play competition and a weekly Sunday 18-hole, medal-play tournament. The season-ending championship tournament and banquet were the highlight of the year.
I really hated to move away from the area and that wonderful group of guys; in fact, for a couple of years, I made the hour-and-a-half, one-way trip four times a week to continue playing them, but all the travel was just too much.
The previous posts explained what league golf is. In the States for public golf courses, it is also the backbone of financially supporting the courses where the leagues are playing. Most leagues sign a contract with the course that guarentees the number of players to play in the league along with the weekday (usually) they play and a set number of weeks the league will compete. Leagues typically only play once a week and some people play in different leagues on different courses on different days. For this guarenteed business, the course reserves the tee times for that league every week they are scheduled. Leagues are a great way for the less than passionate player to keep the sticks out and play. The days where courses can expect walk in play during the weekday to support the business dissappered a very long time ago. Without leagues, there would probably be 60-70% fewer public golf courses. Being from New Zealand, it sounds that maybe most of the courses are private, meaning the course has the money to run its operations up-front. League play in the States mimics that because of the money up front to reserve the tee times. But not all league players have memberships at the club where their league is at, but in a sense have a limited membership because they do have a set tee time at least once a week.

I sent Jim Paulsen a PM volunteering my services if he needed more specific info.
ForgedRbest, I have many more suggestions that might make it easier and more fun for your league. PM me if you're interested.
thanks for the replies, we don't have league golf there, though a version of it could be the semi-official tournaments that I play in each week (Taxi's and Mens Mid-Week) which differ from the official saturday club events.
The vast majority of courses here are indeed private, in my region (Canterbury) there are three public courses (0ne 3-par and 2 full) out of thirty-seven courses.
