Sorry, only get a chance to check forums early a.m. Yes, the course is Colbert Hills in Manhattan, KS. (Bates... It's Kansas STATE University, not Kansas University! Quite a rivalry, there.) CH is a beautiful "gem" in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Check out their web site at colberthills.com Most of us do not EVER play the "Black & Blue" tees. Even when the NCAA regional was held here last year, many of the holes were played from the silver (second from back) set of tees. Every year there is a "Bruiser" tourney that plays all holes from the very tips. Only those that can weild a driver long and straight need apply. #7, a loooong par 5, has 290 yards from the back tees to the front tees. Yes, you have to hit a 300 yard drive to get past the lady's tee box. The hole plays straight north, quite often into a north breeze. Jim Colbert played the course from the bruiser tees just before the course opened to the public. Stiff north wind that day. He said he hit a perfect driver, another driver from the fairway, and a hard 3 wood and was just on the fringe.
When you look at the scorecard on the website, you'll see 5 sets of tees. Most play from the purple tees. Still difficult, but manageable. If you ever have an opportunity to get out this way, make sure you take time to play CH. You will thoroughly enjoy the experience.
