For a golf club? I went through this recently, and these were the items I focused on:
* Clubhouse - I want a clean, presentable clubhouse, but it doesn't have to be extravagant. A pool and jacuzzi are aplus, but not required. Helpful to have shower/locker facilities.
* Location - I want a club to me somewhat convenient to both home and work.
* Course - Obviously, you must like the course!
* Driving range - Full facilities with balls, short game area, putting green, etc. etc. are 100% required, IMO.
* Variables - I try to investigate the "tempo" of the club - is it families, serious golfers, league players, etc. etc.
* Tee Times - As a single player, geting on the course is very important to me. The ability to play often and walk-on easily is critical.
* Costs - Be careful of fees like cart fees, food&drink, and other nuisance fees that can add up the costs. Also - ask for any specials or promotions for the membership initation fee. Like car dealers, this is (somewhat) negotiatiable, depending on the club.
* Invitation Only - Are you required to be invited by a member? IF you don't know a member, sometimes they will assign a "sponsor" for you.
* Equity Clubs - Some clubs are "member owned", which means the members pay up for any improvements or repairs to the club. Other clubs are owned by corporations, where the members don't pay for upgrades.
I hope this helps somewhat - I just joined a golf club, so I'm very fresh with ideas!
lets see my course doesn't reall have a club house for say but they have a little eating area there and my gym is in the same building, they are close by, the fees are very good, they have all the practice areas, hmmmm.........maybe i will but i think i would like to look around a little bit more and see whay i might be missing!!!
The club that is probably the sweetest around where I live has a bar & grill, full range with free balls, full putting/chipping area complete with a few sand traps, two championship courses, and I'm not sure about a pool/jacuzzi. It just is outrageous in my book go be a member, this is why I'm not one! lol Its like 2000 initially, then like 200 a month or something like that for as long as you want to be a member. I just can't afford that in my current work situation.

wow that seems pretty steep. i've never considered joining a club before, but what would be a reasonable price for a halfway decent one? and to sound even more like a newb, what kind of fees do you usually have to pay on top of the monthly membership?

I realize that finances are always a consideration, but this is DIRT CHEEP for a golf club. I joined a club that is $265/month, PLUS other fees like range balls ($10/month) food/drink minimum ($15/month), tax, and cart fees ($15/18holes). Thankfully, the initiation fee was wavied on a promotion, but this is one of the LEAST expensive clubs in the city.
Most clubs around here are anywhere from $250-$380/month PLUS fees, taxes, etc., and at least $2500-$10000 for initiation dues. Many clubs around here are $50,000-$150,000 to join, and invitation only.
OTOH - some international golfers have schweet deals for golf, especially in Austrialia, and New Zealand - every golfer in those areas seems to have it great for low co$t golfing.
wow those prices are way too steep for my pockets.......are thse private courses only that have these type of rates? i was just gonna get a reduced greens fee member ship at 95 down and thne rounds are half off off prime times and less than half for twilights and stuff......normal saturday morning at my course is 40 but witht the reduced fees it is 25

Yes, those are private course prices. Some local public courses have the membership deals you're referring to, but I've found them virtually useless for various reasons, including.......the proshop employees are not informed about the reduced rates, they're only valid during the weekedays, or else they're 2-for-1 specials, which I cannot use (as I play as a single most of the time).
Thanks for the tips on things to look for in a golf membership. My dad as part of his perks for his job gets a membership to a country club and the wone that we are members is being shut down by the preservation society(im part of it go figure) but im going to look for a new club to play at and see if the company will pay for it. Their is a real nice club thats near me Legends Club that host the LPGA but I dont know if that will work out for me.
