Question How do you get a golf scholarship?

A young person (who doesn't live in the USA) recently asked me how to get a golf scholarship to a USA college. Specifically, he said:

"what I basically wanted to know is, how good do I have to be at golf and how good do my grades need to be, and any other different information you would like to give me please."

Does anyone have any information or advice? I went to Google.com and did a search. Here's one thing I found:

http://athleticscholarships.net/golfscholarships.htm

Can someone help out with this?

One of my high school classmates received a golf scholarship to Stanford. I would think a golf scholarship to Stanford would probably be tougher than most other Universities as it is a Division I school and it has a solid academic reputation. I know he was a solid student and could shoot near even par at the local muni's.

A handicap in the single digits would probably be one prerequisite. Grades really depends on the school you want to go for. I know there are minimum NCAA requirements for the ACT/SAT's and GPA but they are pretty low.

Anyway, does this person plan on attending a high school in the United States? This would probably be a big plus as high school coaches usually can provide help with this. Being known on the local golf scene through your performance in high school events can bring attention to you from colleges, too. If not, I'm sure you could try and walk on to most golf teams. If this would be the case, I would research golf teams of colleges the person is interested in and check out the stats of the players to get a guage of what kind of scores they're shooting.

BTW, my classmate who got that scholarship to Stanford was the best high school golfer in the state his senior year. To get a golf scholarship, I really think you have to be known in the high school ranks locally. You can also try walking on the first year and earning a scholarship. I think contacting golf coaches at prospective Universities would be a good way to get a feel for whether this would be a viable option.

I didn't play golf in college, rather I turned professional my second year in order to be able to accept prize money in the state opens (which I used to pay for a large amount of my college education).

I was speaking with the Ladies golf coach at Furman a couple of weeks ago and we were discussing a student of mine and scholarships. He said he barely looks at High School Golf Team results, rather he wants the student athletes that are playing OFFSEASON in State Amateur Events and Higher Profile Junior Events such as the AJGA puts on. The website Jim posted would help but if you are only playing during the golf season and those are the only results you have, unless you are winning state championships individually or finishing very high in the state championships, you will not get a scholarship to a major university.
