Pelz

Not sure which section this 'belongs' to.

David Pelz is the current guru of the short game and is quite a remarkable man who applied scientific method to studying the game and came up with some very interesting conclusions. He has coached a large number of tour players on their shortgame and putting with great effect.

He mentions '5 different games'. Basically he talks of the power swing which is useful from the tee and using long irons and fairway woods. Then he speaks of the 'finesse swing' for distance control with the short game. Then putting. Then two mental games....self control stuff, and course management stuff.

I feel that he is basically 100% correct...but....that the core of the golf swing is essentially the same no matter what the club. That is, it is rotation around a centre whilst maintaining balance and rhythm and having a sense of target and shot, whether that is visual imagery or feel.

Having said that, the 'purpose' of the swing is different in the short game as opposed to the long game..one is for relatively accurate maximum distance and the other is for highly accurate direction and distance 'control'.

What do you feel about this? Has anybody ever had lessons from Pelz or Pelz trained instructors?

I've never had lessons from Pelz or his instructors but I have read all his books. I especially enjoy watching his video lesson that are shown occasionally on the Golf Channel. Whenever I'm having problems with my putting or short game I review his "Bibles." He's very easy for even the novice player to understand and I would highly recommend his instructional books to anyone. Dave Pelz has saved me countless short game strokes over the years!

Yeah, he is not bad for a Phd. rocket scientist from NASA. Sure knows his stuff.

Don't know, but he applied the scientific method to golf and has come up with some amazing theories.

Enough for the likes of Veejay and Annika to 'pay' for lessons.

You know he is the epitome of dedication. who but a rocket scientist ( ) would follow progolfers around in all weather, measuring their drives, irons, wedges putts and establishing percentage error and then analysing the data to come up with a totally new look at the game.
Apparently most of the pros he followed in the early days had to come over and ask:"What the heck are you doing?" And it seems that some of those are still his friends. YOu have to admire an obsession like that, particularly when he mortgaged his whole family on the outcome. He thoroughly deserves any success he might now have!

I agree Swingezy, his story is an interesting one, considering he had a good career with NASA. Golf does crazy things to people.

He is a genius... I have read The Putting Bible, and attended his one-day school. Whenever I see him on the Golf Channel Academy, i don't change the channel.
