Backyard Putting Green Project

Been lurking around for a couple days reading and searching about this topic. Thinking about building myself a backyard yard green for putting and some light chipping. I was planning on spending extra and getting a nylon green instead of the Polypropylene, but then I came across this site about the Bent Poly.

I really like this "kit" its 15x10 and its the Polypropylene but, "supposedly" its bent fibers give a true roll plus it's a little cheaper than nylon. Supports chipping from around 10 yards. which is plenty as I have a smaller suburban yard. Rolls 9 and up on the Stimp Meter. (Is this fast enough? I **** on fast greens and need practice.)

DiY projects don't bother me, gotta save some money somewhere. Just wanted to see if anyone wanted to weigh in on this, other DiYers, if they have bought from this company, they offer free shipping anywhere in the US. I thought the price for the kit was pretty reasonable.

Open to any thoughts or input, thanks again for the help.

Re: Backyard Putting Green Project

Interesting looking putting green. Don't know if 9 is fast enough for you, it would depend on what you are used to in your area. It's a bit slow by Tour standards, but not sure how it would compare to most local golf courses. Would have to use my Stimp meter on my local greens to find out for sure. That's something I've been meaning to do anyway. I also want to test the indoor putting areas at my local Golfsmith and Golf Galazy just for fun.

Re: Backyard Putting Green Project

2 courses in the town I live in, one the greens are pretty slow and the other there pretty fast. The course with the fast greens are killing me.

This build your own green seems like a pretty sweet idea, trying to keep it from getting too expensive. The kit from this site look pretty promising. Also after staring at lots of other people's backyard greens makes me want to do this even more. The idea of being able to just walk outside and chip an putt would be awesome.

you might want to ask about the speed of those green where you play and find out how fast they measure on average so you can compare it to 9 for the kit green.

Re: Backyard Putting Green Project

I think this is what I have decided on...for now. from skillbuilder.com

3/8" spring-set nylon 6-6 with a 5mm foam backing It comes in 12' rolls, my backyard is limited. I'm thinking at least 12x12 @ 3.99 a sq ft. I would like to get the fringe grass also, but may skip that to save a few bucks by not buying more turf... well see.

I still have plenty of room to practice those 10-20 yard chip shots and some bump and runs. Plus all the putting I can handle. I'm thinking about putting 3 holes on the green and a few breaks in the green to keep it challenging.

Based on my research the Nylon will hold up longer, and is perfect for 20 yards or less chipping. Stimp rating of 9-11

I'm going to start getting my ground ready soon and start pricing the other materials needed for a good foundation... and put in for some overtime to get extra pay! hehe

If anyone has any input or thought feel free to weigh in. I'll post pics as things get going.
