I don't know why I keep as many balls in my bag, usually a few dozen. Mostly, it is on a cart anyway. My home courses have lots of water. But in a normal round if I loose 2 or 3 that is a lot. Interesting question.
About 12, which is ridiculous, because I rarely lose more than 1 ball in a round, and often finish with the same one I started with. I use a pull-cart, so I'm not carrying them, anyway.
Wow, I didn't even think about this one. I probably have 20 new Pinnacle's, although they're bad balls. Then I have about 15-20 other old range and water balls in another pocket. I do this because I'm a beginner and on average I lose 2-3 balls per round. Still, it'd probably be lighter if I took the range/water balls out of the other pocket. :P
I carry my bag also. Usually I finish with more balls than when I started! There's about 10 balls when I start. If I find any balls in good condition, I leave it in the bag. If not, I dump them into my shag bag after each round.
Probably about a dozen or so good ones. If I find another good one I will throw it into my bag, if it is a less desirable ball, I will throw it in a storage pocket and toss it into my scrub ball buckets when I get home.

Robert,
I hope those range balls you are carrying don't have stripes on them. If they do are you playing the course with the range balls? If you are and get caught they could throw you off the course. Playing golf with range balls is a big breech of course ettiquite.
I always carry one sleeve of balls, usually come home with more and go i n my shag bag or logo's that go to the collection. I figure if i lose 3 balls i need to go home.
Can't remember coming home with less than 2 in years. never lose one, but have found a water hazard once or twice. PLayed a new corse while out of town this weekend. THe Meadows at the Bay Point resort in Panama city, fl....nice, shot 73
I normally have about 7 or 8 brand new balls in one pocket and about 15 old balls in another pocket. The collection of old balls is just the ones I happen to find while playing....they also work good for hitting extra shots while practicing. If there is no one else on the course I will sometimes drop 10-12 balls on my approach shot and fire away.
I start a tournament with 3 sleeves but normally only have a 1/2 dozen or so in the bag. For tourney's, I clean the entire bag out to make sure I adhere to the 1 ball rule and can't have any accidents.
I guess that I have too many balls around in my bag, but I use a pull cart and the weight thing is a moot point. I guess there is the security thing about having enough if the round goes south! It may be time to purge as I usually end up finding more than losing.
