Ryan Moore, a 21-year-old senior at UNLV this coming year, won every tournament he entered this summer. He won the NCAA in June by six shots, won the US Amateur Public Links for the second time a month later, won again at the Sahalee Players Championship, won once more at the Western Amateur, and finally won the US Amateur last week at Winged Foot. Moore is the first amateur ever to win the Public Links and the Amateur in the same year.
The extent of his dominance over amateur golf this summer kind of makes you wonder why this kid hasn't received more attention from the press.
Your right, guess it is because he is 21, in college, and a male golfer. Go figure, but I would suspect that sports writers expect a dominate male amateur, but I would wager that if he did this at 14 we would be hearing allot more about Moore.
I can't recall if Tiger ever had such a year, as an amateur. I know he won the NCAA's and US Amateur in the same year, but not sure if he won anything else that year.
Maybe he had the best year for an amateur since Bobby Jones but it'd be tough to match Tiger's career amateur accomplishments. I'm trying to find a list of all of them but most only focus on the 3 straight Junior Am's and the 3 US Am's. I know he won a bunch of World Junior titles and such but not sure what other events he may have won, like the Western Am., North and South Am., etc.
I don't recall Tiger playing in the Public Links but maybe he did. Keep in mind that is so rare because the Public Links is only open to Public facility players which means you may not be a member of a private club. The US Amateur is open to ANY amateur with an index not greater than 2.4 where the Public Links will take non-Private amateurs with an index not greater than 8.4.
Translated...The US Amateur is the silver-spoon championship and the Public Links is the "Noonan" championship.
I think I've read before about Tiger being given memberships at clubs during his teenage years, so I don't think he would have been eligible to play in it.
