Yesterday was a public holiday so I managed to sneak off for 18. Temperature was just under 30 C, say 85 F, and amazingly the course was very quiet.
I borrowed a Ping G2 from the pro shop to make things interesting, and proceeded to 9 consecutive fairways... however my irons were recalcitrant, and I had one of my weirdest rounds for ball striking in a long time. I chunked more than usual, but also had several occasions where I took the extra club for safety and then overshot the hole. 3 s-words which is at least two more than usual.
On the first hole I chunked, shanked, and then chipped in to save par. On the third I stiffed my 7 iron to 18 inches for my nearest to a hole-in-one ever... On the fourth my eagle chip hit the pin and rolled to 3 feet (I made the birdie), so I was 1 under after 4 (first ever back to back birdies as well). I then went double, triple, double, double and the bogeyed the 9th to finish in 44.
The back nine was more straightforward, a birdie and a couple of pars to come back in 41. So I shot 85, which is 2 under my handicap, but it really should have been more like 80 or less... still, the birides keep you coming back for the next one!
Just messing around in the weekly twilight at Valley View today...shot a 44...re-teed on two holes when I hit a shot in the water...more fun that way. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had my best swing of the day (6 iron re-tee on a par 3) hehe.
Shot a 46 today. I did however NEARLY have a hole-in-one today! 6th hole, 160 yards uphill, pin located middle of the green. I hit a 9 iron, moved slightly left to right and stuck it 3 inches from the hole, just off the right edge of the cup. Tap in birdie. Overall, it was a good round except for my water shot on the number 8 par 3...made for a nice double bogey.
Shot an 88 yesterday. I hit 7/14 fairways and 4/14 greens and 34 putts. I had 5 pars, 10 bogeys and 3 doubles.
I feel my game is improving quite a bit, however, my approach shots need a little work. I usually land nearly pin high, but I'm often off the side of the green, in the first cut.
I need to work more on taking double bogey out of play.
74 today. Hit the ball probably the best I have all year, but really putting saved me. I made quite a bit of 5 footer par saves. Course is 7113 yards from the tips, 74.1 course rating.
I played at the NZ high school final on the last few days.... all of our team played bad apart from 1 player that was on a scratch, we finished 12th. One of the worst memories I have is 4 putting from 1m (it was a downhill putt from the side) and a few fairway bunker problems hehe.
It was definitly the hardest course I've played on... the greens were super fast and sloping and the pin positions were hard.. and there were those huge fairway and greenside bunkers, but the length was really easy for me, I could nearly drive one par 4 and get on a couple of par 5's in 2. Hmmmm guess I'll have to do some more practice.

Great round deron. I take it you straightened out that "hitting it off the toe" problem.
I'm very excited. I got my first Eagle today on a par 5. I had long drive that landed on the right side of the fairway, then hit hard a 7 iron to the right fringe, then pitched 20 ft. onto the green and into the cup. I rarely get par on a hole and have never gotten a birdie. I guess the Golf Gods were with me today.

Congrats jfpenkala. You should save the ball & the card. :nodsmiley I probably get a birdie per round and I've been playing for over 30 years and never had an eagle.
