Friday I went out to play a quick 9 and joined up with a couple guys down here on vacation. I think someone forgot to remind my game that I hadn't been practicing. I actually played 11 (easier to cut back to the clubhouse) and had 8 pars and 3 birdies. Most impressive was the 9 GIR's. Just one of those days when everything kind of clicked since my longest par putt was 3 feet.

Here's my latest round: Saturday 09/18/04 - Played Coyote Ridge in Carrollton (Dallas suburb) TX. (http://www.coyoteridgegolf.com). This course has two different-style nines, called "Links 9", and "Quarry 9". They are somewhat different in style, and are pretty fun to play. Normally, I would play at the private club I just joined, but there was a huge tournament which led me to try elsewhere this weekend.

Since I predominantly play as a single, I was paired with this fellow who was on his CELL PHONE the ENTIRE time he was on the driving range. I can't stand playing with people yacking on their phones all during a round of golf. Before we started, I couldn't help but asking............."Are you going to play with that cell phone on during the round? .........If so, I'd like to wait for a later group". Thankfully, he immediately apologized, turned the phone off, and explained that he never uses it during a round, only while on the driving range. (whew) The 4th was a pretty nice guy who seemed out just for some fun.

Anyhoo - this guy turned out to be a LOT of fun. He was from the "islands" (Jamaica, Caribbean or somewhere), had interesting attire (sandals, and a hawaiian-style shirt), was a VERY good player (I think he shot +4 on the day), and he was an equipment junkie (Taylor Made Tour Preferred 510TP driver/Speeder 757 shaft, Mizuno MP30 irons), so we had a lot to talk about. He "encouraged" us to play from the back tees, which measured 6721 yards, 73.2/136 slope ratings. I started great, but struggled later in the round, and got very, very hot and dehydrated (the water barrels on the course were empty, and no cart girls were around ~12-13th holes and afterward). We had a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the company of my playing partners tremendously. I struggled over the last few holes, but still managed an 84, which is a good score for me.

LOW-of-the-ROUND was: My two drivers (Cleveland Launcher 400 9.5*') were re-shafted with Aldila NV S-flex shafts after a recent launch monitor visit. I had just picked up the backup driver, which had an NV-65S pullout installed in it, and was hitting it like S***. I don't know why, but I was snap-hooking all over the course the first two times I hit it, so.......I left it the bag and used my 3W or 5W the rest of the round, prompting my Caribbean playing partner to say: "Why don't you re-shaft that Driver with the same shaft in your 3W and 5W (Titleist 980F, 15* and 19*, Titleist/Fuji OEM "Speeder" S-flex shafts) since you're hitting your woods so well?". Hm, Maybe I should try that!

HIGHLIGHT-of-the-ROUND was: My fairway woods were ON, I was hitting a lot of fairways for me (8), and striking my 3W / 5W exceptionally well, often getting HUGE yardage from them. My long irons were also going very well. And.....my handicap (finally) is lowering to a 10.07 , which is an all-time low for me!

Shot a 44/46 90 on a 71.2/124. 4 penalty strokes & 36 putts(yikes). They'd aerated the greens within the last week or so, but they weren't all that bad & hey a bad excuse is better than none at all Round highlight was on a 360 yard tight par 4. I popped up my drive into the right rough on top of a hill, 153 out, ball 6" above my feet. I knocked a 7-iron about 8' feet past the pin and go over to the left woods where my buddies are struggling to help them find their balls. They get to the green, neither had said a thing about my shot. They're both counting "2 in, 3 out , 4 ...5 on" so I say "let's see, 1 ...um 2". They laughed... sort of and I sank the putt.

I played interestingly on Sunday.

I started out with two triples on the front! But then...I got a par, then a double, then a bogey. After the bogey, there was a par, bogey, a par, and a par. I got a 45 on the front despite three bad holes!

Then the back came. I tripled the first three holes and came back...sort of...I doubled the 13th and 14th, parred the 15th, doubled the 16th and 17th and bogeyed the 18th. I got a 54 on the back for a 99...

99 isn't that bad a score for me (overall, it's a tad on the mediocre side for me) but it just bothers me to have a great front and a horrible back.

84... from the Ladies Tees!

It was the annual "Red Tees" event in my Men's League. We all hit from the forward tees. On some holes, the red-tee advantage didn't change the hole that much. However, on the holes where it did, I did two things that didn't help. I either (1) got greedy and hit an aggressive shot and got myself into trouble or (B) clubbed-down to be safe and wound up in about the same spot I would have been in if I'd hit more club from the men's tees. Amazing how many ways I can find to make bogey.

My net score put me in the middle of the pack. Amazingly, about half the guys did even worse than I did.

Yeah sure Jim, whatever excuse you need to justify playing from the ladies tees.....
