I played in the annual Valley View Amateur at my home course. This is the toughest Am that I play in each year. It's over 7,100 yards from the Black tees, the rough is high, the greens are fast, and the pins are in tricky places.
I had my best score in this tournament last year and shot the same 79 this year. Last year, it was worth $65. I think it will be worth more this year.
My 79 in the Valley View Am was worth $100. I bought a couple of gloves, cleaning thang, and a dozen balls after finishing the 9 hole men's league tournament today.
I shot Even in the league today. I had 1 bogey with a three putt (tough putt) and 1 birdie (two putt hehe). The 6th hole is killing me. I played it differently this time (more conservative) and still didn't par it. I hit a poor 7 iron approach shot, though...left too long of a putt with a big break.
The 36 will be in the money...always nice to wait a couple of days until the results come in when you know you're in the money.
The conditions were excellent after very heavy rain yesterday. The course doesn't get in much better shape. It helped that the annual Am was last weekend. The courses are usually in great shape for their Am.
Memorial Day I played at the Meadowbrook Farms. Designed by Greg Norman. Teed from the middle tee (blue), course rating 72, slope 126, shot 95 with 39 putts.
I started off birdie-birdie. I was closer than usual for my second shot on the #1 par 5. I hit into a bunker that I have never been in before...landed left of the green, but pin-high (past a shorter bunker). I hit a good sand shot from there, but it's straight downhill and the ball rolled about 30 feet past (went directly over the hole). I made the putt and made another birdie putt on #2 from about 10 feet below the hole.
On #3 I hit my drive behind a tree a little. I aimed left of the green and it didn't slice. I had to chip under a tree from there, barely miss the bunker, and have it trickle to the hole. I almost made it and I didn't think there was any chance of getting it close. I tapped in for par and broke the state law of paring a hole after a birdie...not to mention birdieing a hole after birdie hehe.
On #9 I hit a 9 iron from the rough and an uphill lie. I hit a power line. Good thing because it was going left and might have gone in the bunker or worse. I re-hit and this time played an 8 iron with a smoother swing. I hit it pin-high and just had a 5 foot birdie putt, but I played too much break...2 under 33 and it was pretty easy with a couple of putts barely missed.
There is a Gross/Net individual tournament there Saturday for the league...hope to have fun then too.
I also found out today that my 36 Tuesday in my other league took 1st place Net and won $40 for me hehe.
When I checked to see if I won a skin for the last time I played the noon game (18 holes) none of my 5 birdies held up for a skin in the twilight play, though. I did win one skin from those for $41 in the separate cash game (only 3 skins were paid).
Shot +1/37 Started Bogey,Bogey, then went birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey, par, birdie, par. I stuck both my tee shots on the par 3's within a putters legnth (wish it was league night,I would have made $150 or so). I have never made 3 bird's before in 18 holes,so to do it in 9 made me really happy. Wish I didn't start so poor (more the head wind then anything). And they other bogey was from a lost ball, that I over drew into the trees,(so I wasn't totally unhappy with that)
shot a 42 on a par 34. The fairways are 4 mower-widths wide. It has one hole (#8) which is a very very very long and difficult par 4. I have a tournament at it later and the year, and kids who are in competition to win the tournament may go from say second to 8th on that one hole. It is so hard that the course has made it only one penalty shot when u hit it in the creek. if I wouldnt have gotten an 8 on that hole i would have done ok. (sad thing was.. I had the best score on that hole in my foursome)
I played in a gross/net men's league tournament today. I had a 4 over 75 and got in the money. I won closest to the hole on #2 and #5. The group thought I had a hole in one on #5 because it disappeared behind the stick. We couldn't see the ball until we got close to the green. I think 0' 3" usually wins closest to the hole hehe.
The bad points were a 2 penalty stroke on #4 for hitting the wrong ball out of the rough. That cost me from winning high up. The other bad thing was a silly pin position on #10 that lead to a 3 putt. It was on quite a slope.
I had to make an up-and-down on #18 it turned out to get in the money. My second shot on this par 5 tried to get on and close to the pin, but the big grass bunker guarding the entire left side of the green grabbed it. The ball stayed up near the top of the grass bunker with a decent lie, but my stance was really awkward with the ball way above my feet. I almost chipped it in from there and made the 2 1/2 footer for birdie, 39, 75, and to get in the money.
Another good men's league score today to follow up my 1st Net 36 from last week. We played the back nine this time and I shot 1 over 37.
I started off with bogey because my drive caught the right side of a tree and just dropped down. It's a good line to play because it otherwise would have kicked into the middle of the fairway. I only hit my second shot about 15 feet and the tree still interfered with my swing, but I hit it on from there anyway. I had to two putt from about 80 feet, though.
On the second hole, I got on in two for the first time that I can think of. I had another good long two putt and got a birdie this time.
On the third hole, a long par 3, I hit a poor tee shot into a bunker, made a mediocre long bunker shot, then made a great putt to save par. It barely fell into the hole - side door drop.
I played pretty solid, but I shanked a 3/4 wedge approach shot on #17, a par 5. I had to make a 6 foot or so putt for bogey.
The low round was a 36 so far...the 37 should have another chance for 1st Net...handicap updating time for the league no doubt hehe. My USGA is 4.7 and it's under 4 for the league...they go to tenths for Net scores and keep their own handicap for the league.
Tomorrow morning, it's an annual company 9 hole tournament. It's supposed to be colder and rainy...already been postponed once from two weeks ago. :o(
