2 weeks ago me and my society went for a 4 day golf break in Chester, we played a couple of nice courses but on the sunday played the De Vere Carden Park. This was just a week after the seniors tour was there and i felt kinda special to be playing it, the greens were freakishly fast and it took me at least 5 or 6 holes to get the jist of`em. Even off the back tee`s i managed to string 5 good pars and 2 birdies in the middle of the round, the first 5 or 6 holes i was very nervous and just didnt want to duff a shot, the last few holes i couldn`t believe i`d got so many pars/birdies on a championship course and then the inevitable happened.............the wheels came off and i had 3 blobs in 5. It was good to be back in reality but still posted a well chuffed 33 pts playing off 14.
The only other champ course ive played was Fulford at York where Langer had to play from up a tree.
I was wondering if anybody else had played a championship course and how did they fair???
I've played PGA West Stadium and Nicklaus Courses. I did alright on both, but could have done much better. They are both the types of courses that you can understand shooting a bad score, but also want to return to over and over to try and "tame" them. I've said it in this place before, The Stadium Course is my favorite golf course.
I shot 99 from the forward tees at the Ocean Course, Kiawah Island. It was windy and I hadn't played in 6 months. Was about an 18 hdcp at the time.
I wanted to ask about the part of your post that I quoted. You're referring to Stableford points, right? I think I've seen other UK golfers use Stableford points to report how they did. Is Stableford scoring a common thing for casual play in the UK? Here in the States, I usually play stroke play (in league competition) or match play (with friends).
Jim
I played the Ocean Course, from the middle tees, worked by butt off for an
hard earned 82. It was a beautiful day with little wind. I was a 5 handicap at the
time. Really good course, good American links course but not like the real thing
in Scotland
Nice round, bcoons52. Adjusting your hdcap for the course slope, that's about what you'd be expected to shoot, I'd guess. If I had fun, bet you had even more fun. Would love to play a "real deal" in Scotland someday.
Some of the championship courses I have played include: Bethpage Black (70), Whistling Straits (84), Kingsmill (79), En-Joie(80), TPC Canyons (73), Innisbrook-Copperhead (75), TPC Heron Bay (79).
But, the one I am probably most proud of, was Shinnecock, back tees, only time I ever played it, shot a 76. The greens were GREEN that day, not brown - thank goodness!!

Stableford is used a great deal in the UK mainly for society days. Its used to keep the game going and also for a higher handicap player not to worry about having a bad hole. I play off 16 (14 in my society) so i get a shot on stroke index holes 1 to 16, this means that if i say get a bogey 5 (gross score) on a par 4 (SI 1), since i get a shot i end up with a net par, so get 2 pts.
Scoring system -
1 over hole = 1 pt
par = 2 pts
1 under hole =3pts
2 under hole = 4 pts
If i cant score i pick up (blob) and go to the next hole, so even if i have a couple of bad holes the worst that can happen is a blob, unlike medal/stroke play where if i start with a 9 or 10 my scores going to be pretty poor whatever i do.
When i play with my mates we do everything, stableford, stroke and matchplay all at the same time, so even if i shot a 100 and only scored 25 pts i could still win a bit of dough by winning the matchplay. If theres 4 of us, matchplay is done by points, 1 pt for an outright hole win and half a point to the joint top scorers, no points for 2nd place. It makes it so theres always something to play for.
Thanks for that explanation, Mojo. I'll bet I would have more fun if I played Stableford points. I'm so focused on trying to break 90 that if I make a "snowman" (shoot an 8 on a hole) once or twice early in the round, I have less fun the rest of the day. Stableford would make it easier to forget the past.
We Yanks will be having some fun with you Euro's on this site in the next few days (teasing about the Ryder Cup), but you guys (and the other non-Yanks here) really add a lot to Golf Rewind. Thanks for being here.
I have played quite a few championship courses(not with the great success as
"14 and 18". I have played Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hills, Doral Country Club (Miami),
Bay Hill (Orlando), Shoal Creek (Birmingham, Al); The Old Course at St Andrews,
Muirfield (Scotland); Carnoustie (Scotland); Royal Troon (Scotland);Turnberry
(Scotland);Royal Dornoch (Scotland);KIngsbarn (Scotland);and the Ocean course at Kiawah Island. Want to play Augusta
and my golf career will be complete.
