I have been fortunate to have played golf with many distinguished
people. I have played with golfers Jerry Pate, Hubert Green &
Buddy Gardner. Football coaches Paul "Bear" Bryant (many times),
Pat Dye (former head coach Auburn University), Bill Battle (former
head coach University of Tennessee)
Evil Kineval (what a blast!!!, he would bet on anything!!!) and George
Lindsey (Gober on the Andy Griffith show) He is from my home town and
he would delight us as kids to play golf with us, What a great guy.
Hope to hear from other golfers about famous playing partners
I have never actually golfed with anyone famous, but i have golfed with one of the best amateurs in my province and i joined up with the premeire of my province in august when he was golfing with his wife.
Thats about all.
I played with Fred Funk. He was 14 & I was 15, if that counts. We went to the same middle & high school, along with a former Detroit Lions QB(briefly). He says he wasn't very good back then but he was a heck of a lot better than any of the rest of us who played, although there weren't that many of us... golf wasn't very popular among teens back in the late 60's/early '70's.
Although the pay stinks, the people you meet in this business is impressive. People I have played with: Former President Bush and Fred Couples at Cape Arundel, Phil Mickelson AND Bones (Bones took all the money), Joe Theisman (several times a year), Coach Knight, Coach Cremmins, John Mellencamp, Fuzzy Zoeller, and MANY other "not-so-star" Tour Players. One LPGA player that is up and coming I have played many times with is Reilley Rankin.
Talk about betting, I played a few times with Charles Oakley and Jason Williams and those guys bet on EVERYTHING and they also TIP for EVERYTHING.
Like I said, low pay but the people you meet are wonderful.
Charles Oakley looks like a cat thrown off a 4 story building when he swings. He is so tall, I can't watch him swing cause it always looks like he is going to get tangled up. I have been FORTUNATE enough NOT to play with Charles Barkley...lol. If my headcover started taunting him, he could easily squash me...lol.
The one grand thing you realize when playing with the rich and powerful is that Golf shows no favorites and their mistakes are penalized just as much as ours. Man I love this game.
