any value in golf training tools?

As anyone who watches the golf channel may know, there are tons of these "training tools" available which are supposed to help your swing etc.

Anyone know if any of them actually help?

Specific ones that i can remember are:

The speed stik
Medicus Driver/5-iron
Balance Bracelet (honestly dont see how this helps...)
Inside Approach

I am a bit skeptical when it comes to buying any of these things as i think lessons would help more, just wondering if anyone uses them or has any thoughts on them. The balance bracelet is just lol, imho.

I will throw in my 2 cents worth. I think lessons help more than the training aids on TV, but I will say this I made my own Inside Approach for about $10.00 looks a lot like the one on the GC, did it help maybe. Balance Bracelet well I wear one does it help again maybe it's all what you believe in but even it it does not it is one cool bracelet to wear.

Many of the training aids have value and are simply commercialized versions of things we use all of the time in teaching. For instance, I have a piece of pipe insulation in my teaching bag which I slip into the holes in the teaching bucket and wow, a generic inside approach. The Medicus can be tricked but for tempo, it is very valuable. As for the Speed Stick, the drills used with it would increase distance even without performing them with the actual Speed Stick.

I agree with you on the training aids but I also think there are a lot of people that purchase these aids thinking that they are going to find the magic bullet to fix all there problems without the help of a good teaching pro and all they do is to ingrain more bad habits.

I'm afraid that if I buy my first training aid, I'd be hooked..... and I'd end up looking like Kevin Kosner in the Tin Cup scene where he's in the trailer wearing every "training aid" imaginable. Spend the money on a quality lesson from a recommended teaching pro and at least you'll come away feeling like you learned something. That saves you from the disgust you'll feel a couple of years down the road when you find that $100.00 training aid in a dusty old box in the back of the garage. Right where you threw it when it wasn't working for you!

I think all of the training aids you listed probably work, with exception to the balance bracelet. I have absolutely no comment on that because I don't really know how it works. I know some people who have used the inside approach and have had their swings improve. At the very least, I would think the speed stik would help during warmups.

As I said in my earlier post I wear the balance bracelet it may be and probably is all in my mind but I do have ache's and pain's that are associated with getting older, when I wear the bracelet the pains seem to be less and at times goes away as I said it may well all be in my head but I say whatever works to help relieve or stop those pains that is ok with me.

I've just bought the Pro Aim putting glasses and for once I think there's an aid that can really help. Check it out (www.proaim.com) - it's endorsed by Butch Harmon, Calcavecchia and there's a decent DVD with it starring Natalie Gulbis which makes it worth spending the $40 or so anyway
