Hello everyone. I am a new golfer and have been practicing at the range about twice a week and have had three lessons with a so-so instructor. So far so good and I Plan to take more lessons. I was wondering which irons you guys would recommend for a newbie. What am I looking for? I have a new Nike Titanium driver and have read good things about the slingshot series of irons but I am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
I can't recommend a particular brand as I only have experience with Golden Bears (do not recommend them). However, get consistent with all your irons, and I believe you will be much more consistent than those who simply "give up" on the 3/4 iron (and in many cases, even 5 iron) because "it's too hard". It is harder, yes, but not "too hard." You just have to round your swing out and swing in-to-out around your body.
So... get a 3-PW set, as well as one or two extra wedges; a sand wedge is definitely a good idea, as well as a gap wedge. I only have the sand wedge, but only due to lack of funds.
Find a course or a retailer with a range, where they will let you try out different brands of clubs. That way you'll know what feels best to you and which clubs are in your price range. You'll probably have to pay for the bucket of balls, but it's a good investment in your satisfaction with your clubs.
I wouldn't go into the process with any preconceived notions about which clubs are better. Let your hitting them, feeling them, and seeing the results determine your choice. Eventually, you will probably outgrow your first set anyway as your swing develops and your needs change.
Cobra, welcome to Golf Rewind. I don't know how much you have budgeted for new irons, but the Tommy Armour 845's are an excellent choice and can be had for less then $250.00. The Nike Slingshots are also excellent clubs, although a bit more expensive. The most important aspect, especially since you are already taking lessons, is to let your pro fit you for your clubs, this will make a big difference as your swing progresses. Again, welcome, and if you can please post a little about yourself in the Introductions and Greetings section.
Should the beginner be more concerned with learning the basics of golf and making sure he wants to play for the long-run before spending too much on clubs? YES SENSEI!
Is the beginner on the right track by practicing regularly and taking instruction? YES SENSEI!
Will working with a "so-so instructor" help your game, NOT SENSEI!
Should the beginner find an instructor that matches his personality and communicates his ideas easily with the beginner? YES SENSEI!
I use that screenname in a lot of forums and no one ever recognizes where its from. Congrats. Thanks for all the tips guys, I really appreciate it. I am going to find a Pro instructor once this run of six classes is over. The current instructor is a nice guy and a good golfer but not a great teacher which is what I need. Any recommendations for Fort Lauderdale FL,? Back to the club question, I see a set of Nike Fake clubs 3-pw for cheap on ebay and thought they would be a good trainer also. $159 and based on the slingshot design.
I appreciate the advice on going to the actual pro store and trying a few. I think I will try that this weekend.
BTW, for everyone in the dark, Cobra Kai is the name of the Karate school where all the guys that beat up Daniel in Karate Kid went to.
I do not advise getting knockoffs. With them, you usually get what you pay for, which is inaccuracy and inconsistency. Get a brand name club. The Hogan CFT is a good club. They might be as cheap as $400 right now. The slingshot is a good club. However, the most important thing is to get lessons.
Good luck, and welcome to the game!
If you are willing to shell out some dough on new clubs and you are taking lessons, then I will assume you are getting serious about golf. So I do recommend getting a good set of irons.
#1) graphite shafts. Regular flex. Why: forgiveness is your number 1 concern. Who cares about distance and accuracy. What is accuracy to a newbie anyways? Newbies will soon learn how difficult golf really is.
#2) Don't get a set of knockoffs. What kind of people wear fake Rolexs? Be real. Think real. And yes, you do get what you pay for.
#3) Buy a set of clubs that work for you now. Not what you think or how you think you will be in 3 or 5 years. We all thought we could be 18 handicappers within one or two years :) Some of us made it, but most of us haven't in that period of time.
#4) Suggestions: Callaway's X-16, X-14, Cleveland Launcher iron set. It's part hybrid. Tour Edge Bazooka JMAX (I haven't tried it yet. Maybe next week. I'll let you know if they are any good or not). King Cobra sets oversized (I haven't tried them).
As for drivers and fairways: For a newbie: Check out Cleveland Sport OS. I don't know why, but http://www.golfdiscount.com is selling them at 50 bucks off each! And free shipping and most likely no tax to you. Only $150 for all Titanium deep face driver and $100 for fairway wood. Both are offset. Most beginners (in general) will slice. Offsets do help. They do wonders. Hopefully I will be able to demo the Cleveland Sport tomorrow night.
Bazooka JMAX Iron-=Wood #6 for $49.99! If you don't like it, then you only spent 50 bucks. Not sure if or how much shipping is. If you like it, they are hoping you will buy more. My driving range is selling them for $75 for each additional.
I should try it at my driving range real soon. Personally for me, hybrids are so darn easy to hit. I think they should be outlawed like the belly putter.
CobraKai - welcome to GR and the game.
You can spend a ton of money playing this game. I have a friend that just started in the game also here is what he did.
Not all knockoffs are bad he got a set for under $300.00 for bag, driver, 3 fairway woods and irons. I have hit his and the clubs are ok, upgrade the shafts and you will be ok.
Cleveland Launcher iron would be a very forgiving irons the TA 7 and TA 7 tours are nice but I would recommend staying away from the TA7 tours very little offset, more of player club.
If you can find a golf store that has used equipment you can find set’s cheap maybe a set of Slingshots.
Callaway makes a very forgiving iron the X14 is on sale now and the X16 will be soon.
The Callaway Big Bertha 2004 irons are very nice.
Also you can go to some sites like Callaway pre owned and golfclubexchange and find some good deals.
