Volunteering for a PGA Tournament

Thought this would be really cool. I'm thinking about volunteering for a PGA Champions tour tournament next year. However, I'm under 18 and it says the only things I can do is to be a scorecard runner or a bearer.

Would you do it if you were me? Could use some volunteer hours for college & think it would be pretty cool watching the pros play.

What can anyone really say, other than Go for it! I know at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, MI the list to volunteer is a mile long! If you have even the slightest chance not only to volunteer, but to actually end up inside the ropes, you'd be foolish not to take it. Good luck! BTW If it does work out for you we will expect daily reports and all the "inside" scoops!

Just think, if you get in now as a standard bearer, it is much better than being a volunteer "policeman." When the volunteers shake those signs at you, is that the same thing as shouting? I love it when you get the nazi marshall and they raise their sign when the action is 75 yards away and give you dirty looks if you move. I did get into an argument with a first-time rope nazi one time at The Legends in Savannah over where to stand for one of my favorite players shots (Jim Thorpe). I was trying to get a picture during the pro-am and he had hit it way wide. This guy wanted me to stand almost 75 yards wide of his line of play because it was "unsafe" being 30 yards off the line of play, behind a tree.

I do it each year for the NZPGA at Clearwater (coming up again at the end of feb), it's good fun, and well worth it....go for it if you have the opportunity.

Cheers,
Jim

This past summer I had an opportunity to be a standard bearer at the U.S. Senior Open here in St. Louis. It was a great experience for me. I was inside the ropes, and got to see closeup how good some of these guys are. Not only that, but I was also with some pretty notable names such as Bruce Fleisher, Dana Quigley, and Bobby Wadkins (who was an absolute jerk). Great experience :) I'd recommend you to do it

I volunteered at the US Open at Bethpage. Being inside the ropes as a marshall was an awesome experience. I got to see the best players in the world play one of my favorite courses. The most interesting thing was watching the players during the practice rounds drop balls in particular places and take shots with different clubs.
It's a great experience, hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

HOW did you do that? I've attempted to volunteer for the Byron Nelson Classic, and the Colonial tournaments here in the Dallas area for several years, and I can NEVER seem to get in, even as a parking lot attendant.

I have done this before. I worked for one Senior Tour event(Champions now) and 4 or 5 years at a LPGA event, The Safeco Classic. It was really cool. I was a standard bearer, the guy with the walking scoreboard. I worked transportation-drove some of the players to and from their hotels, airport, fast food joints. Drove a courtesy bus to shuttle people from off site parking to the course. I would recommend the standard bearer gig if you can get it. You get to see the whole course and watch a group of golfers go at each other for 18 holes. Don't talk to the golfers or their caddies, they are for the most part pretty friendly-Chi Chi excluded. They will talk to you when they want too. The tourneys I worked at, you would get tickets for attend the event if you weren't assigned to work that day. If they offer this to you, by all means use it. Have fun if you get picked.

Keith, as for as ticketing goes, I can go to the tournament at any time for free (even during the pro-am) and was given quite a few tickets for friends. Pretty sure I got picked though since they have already sent me a confirmation letter with some of those tickets..
