Hmmph!

I have done my back in and I can't play golf

I have now missed two days when the weather was actually good for golf, which in December in Scotland is a sin.

thankyou for your reply - yes, until I did my back in I was doing exercises for my abs and also doing core stability stuff too, so I really feel I don't deserve it! I must have angered the golf gods somehow.

I have 8 weeks to recover as I'm off to spain for a golfing holiday then. Last year I managed to get appendicitis 4 weeks before my golf holiday in portugal, this time I'm determined to be on top form.

Dont worry, hey have a magic spray in Spain called Reflex, like the ones they use on football players...

I feel your pain, Duff.

After my first back surgery back in 1985 or 86, my doctor gave me all kinds of back exercises to do, and I did them faithfully until 1997 when I had another herniated disc problem and needed surgery again. At that point a new surgeon told me that disc problems are not improved or prevented by exercise. A degenerative disc is going to degenerate regardless of what you do.

About all you can do is to build up the muscles in your back to support the spine firmly, keep those muscles healthy and strong so that they don't cause additional pain, keep one's weight down to prevent putting too much pressure on the back, and use correct technique when lifting. Even these steps don't always prevent a recurrence of injury.

There's nothing worse than back pain. I've had it so bad that I literally could not move without suffering unbearable pain. The good news is that most back pain will go away on its own after a few days of complete rest. Good luck!

Duff, I too feel your pain, figuratively. My back began to hurt a couple of weeks ago, and the doctor said it was a sprain, and could take anywhere from a week to 3 months to "heal."

The golf doesn't bother me, since on the east coast I'm done now until late March, but more important my 8 month old grandson will be visiting us for 10 days during Christmas. I better be able to pick him up and play with him or I'll be really annoyed. And, he's a chubby little guy to boot!

Yay! Back is much better and I went to the range yesterday. I was worried I might have somehow forgotten how to hit, but I was doing well, no horrible slices.

For info I was doing exercises from a book "treat your own back" by Robin McKenzie, and it seems to have helped a lot - I would thoroughly recommend it.

Great news, Duff!

And thanks for the book tip! I'm sure that many of us could benefit.
