Hey.. does anyone have any suggestions or adjustments for playing golf in colder weather? Between the wind and the temperature I couldnt control my distance at all. Any thoughts??
Well the wind is going to be a factor, regardless of temp. I've found low temp and/or high humidity = decreased distance. It's mostly trial & error though as to how much. I generally go up a club if it drops much below the mid 40's and is overcast/humid.
keep warm.....gloves or mittens between shots work great. i also find that wearing extra clothes makes you a little less 'loose,' so personally i feel a little different, not specifically better or worse, but different. as stated before, a little more club.....i try and hit a few more 'knock down' punch shots with more club than under ideal conditions. cold golf is still better than no golf, so happy playing!
Use those hand warmer packets, not so much to keep you warm but to keep you ball warm....... I alternate balls from my pocket on each tee because a warm ball goes significantly further.
1. Mittens to keep your hands warm between shots,
2. Wool hat that covers your ears,
3. A couple of pairs of socks to keep your feet relatively warm,
4. Invest in a good "silk" type thermal underwear. Its pretty light, but keeps you warm.
5. Dress in a couple of light layers.
If you still aren't warm, stay home - its too cold to play golf.
* NO COTTON - Cotton gets wet and icky. I like microfiber or other golf-designed vests/jackets. I have a SunMountain jacket with removable sleeves that is wonderful. Always dress in layers if possible, for when the temperature changes.
* Warm Hat that covers your ears - I use a funky black stretchy thingy that I also use for skiing and cycling.
* Hand Heater Pouches - Those little pouches that you tear open, and they heat up. I keep one in my pocket to keep my hands warm and toasty.
* Thermacare wrap for your lower back is truly magnificent in cold weather!
* Extra pair of socks - Keep an extra pair of socks in your bag in case your feet get soaked. You'd be surprised at how good it feels to put on clean, dry socks at the turn, if you've been playing in wet weather.
I hate putting on wet weather gear!!!
So I just carry on as I am..... maybe put on a jacket.
The only thing I find that you must have is gloves so it doesn't slip out of your hands!....and a towel.
That also reminds me a few weeks ago I won this tournament in the pouring rain, and I carryed on in my shortd and top.
ok don't listen to me I'm dumb, but I hate wet weather gear!

Keeping a ball warm with anything but your own body heat is a violation of the rules. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm not sticking my hand in anyone's pocket to check!

It's just a different game in the cold. Play enough in it and you'll learn the adjustments quickly enough, usually a shorter backswing and follow-through, and accepting the limitations on what you can do.
Staying comfortable is the first order of business, or the whole experience will be so miserable that you'll just pack it in. Winter golf gloves are a must, as is a hat that provides protection for your ears.
- A skull cap that covers my ears, an absolute must for me when it dips below 45' F
- an extra pair of socks
- a couple of layers on top
If I have to wear gloves, it's too cold. I played football for years in all sorts of terrible weather without them.
How cold is too cold ? Too windy ? Too wet ?
Too cold - if the ground is frozen
Too windy - windchill below 30' F
Too wet - If you can get from tee to green without wading it's dry enough, but I never head out in the rain.
I froze in the winter playing golf for 40 years until I got up the nerve to really do something drastic about it....I moved to Sarasota, Florida. I have been here two years and I have never looked back.

So to beat the cold you say it's warm in Florida, eh wb4tjh ? Geez, thanks for the tip. Just kidding... it's the frustration talking as I look out my office window at the ice flows on the Detroit River. Only about 3 more months to go ....
