The Quiet Mind..!

Is the ability to quieten the mind possibly one of the single most ignored ingredients to improving our golf swings? How many times have we all `got ahead of ourselves` only to see a good golf score melt like a sun-batheing snowman.
A friend who practises yoga once told me to try this exercise. When you want to quieten the mind if you press the tip of your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth, it will have a quietning effect on your thought processes. Crazy sounding yes but try it on the golf course some time...(and I bet you`ll try it after you`ve read this post too).

To do something we have to think about it unless it is a natural reaction. TO do this exercise you suggest is no different. By thinking of doing this we cant be thinking aobut something else too.

For some time now I`ve noticed how Padraig Harrington bites his tongue during and after his swing . I guarantee if you watch him next year you`ll notice this, especially when holding the followthrough(you`ll see it pertrude). Apparantly, when asked about this, he commented on how he`d been advised to do it, as it aids concentration. I agree with shootin4par that this destraction stops the brain from thinking about too many things, but maybe the tongue in particular, influences conscious thought, in the same way that it`s imperative for speech.

When you are thinking OUCH!!! you cant think about much else. he bites his tounge because it is hard for observers to tell what he is doing but he does this as a masochistic way to get his mind off of negative golf thoughts. Who knows, maybe when people are not watching he might whack himself in the shin with a wedge to get his mind off of bad swing thoughts

there might be something to this tongue thing. didn't michael jordan have his tongue flying all over the place when he was playing? and yup, i've noticed it with P.Harrington, it's not really pleasant to look at though,(his tongue all over the place). lol

maybe next time, i'll right it on my glove to remind me to press my tongue against my roof.

This is why one of the main pieces of advice tour pros give is play one shot at a time. I am currently trying to master the art of not "getting ahead of myself" It seems to be helping my game alot.

...oops sorry about the above (unfinished post) but my computer is a little poorly/misbehaving at the moment . As I was saying, I`ve noticed this tongue matter is something that I`ve seen Tiger do as well, especially on those stinger two irons. I was talking to a friend who`s a big tennis fan and he said that Pete Sampras used to do something very similar as he said it helped his concentration.
