Has anyone played virtual golf in those simulators? We recently had a new indoor virtual golf business open up about 10 miles from my house. Being that it's 30 degrees with almost 2 feet of snow on the ground I'm considering burning the $30 to play a round. I understand you can choose from over 35 of the world's best golf courses. I would love to play Pebble Beach or Harbor Town even if it is simulated. Is this worth my time?
There are a couple in my area. They are fine to get out and swing. The newer simulators do a pretty good job of estimating distance, and even a fade/slice/hook/draw. A few buddies of mine played about 3 rounds last winter and had a good time. It takes a while to figure out the subtle changes. The biggest thing on the one we played on was that you couldn't get your driver in the air fast enough for the sensors to putt the ball in the air, so we usually hit 3W or 5W off the tee. Other than that, it was pretty realistic.
I'm thinking about getting into a league out here. 2 person teams, play 9 holes a week......like you, snow and cold hinder a guys golf during the winter around here.
Yep, I bet you have it worse than me being in North Dakota. I saw that movie "Fargo"....nothing but snow everywhere you look.
Thanks for the info on the simulators. I might go there next week. I haven't swung a club in over a month and I'm having withdrawal.
We have some that use the Links LS version of the computor game. They are pretty good fun for the winter months when you just want to keep swinging a club and dont like hitting into a net. We play weekly and enjoy getting together through the winter for a beer or two. Chipping and putting takes some getting uesd to but other than that just enjoy. And remember it is a computor simulator, so dont expect the same as real golf.
You know what league? I'll bet you are the only one in the world who could possibly try to lay up and hit it in the hole, even on a game. Shows just how bad your distance judgement is....

You really should think about bringing your game up a level or two before you question other's distance judgement. That hole-out just shows how inaccurate some simulators can be. Simulators are just expensive video games and I haven't wasted my money since. A 1/2 hour on the range is a lot more productive.

I can agree with that very much. The sims ARE a game. MOre computor than real, but fun none the less.
If your looking to get better and practice a certain thing, this wont help as much as a range will. But for fun and getting together on those cold winter nights or mornings, it's a blast.
Oh league, you know I'm just giving you a hard time. BTW, I'm not as bad as you think. And by the other way, I spend almost more time out on the range during the summer than any amateur I know. Its not uncommon for me to hit 200-500 balls a day about 4 times a week. Now, if I could only putt....
And yes, I will give you that sims are merely a computer game at this stage, and not really accurate. But hey, its great when the cold weather hits! If the weren't so expensive I would buy one, but they are so out of my price range it is ridiculous.

I didn't say I think you're bad. I'm going by the 10 handicap you listed in your profile. I read recently where you posted that you're "scratch" when you practice in the summer. I don't know any scratch players that can't putt and add 10 strokes to their handicap in the winter. Here's a tip for you.......hitting 2000 balls a week don't mean squat if you can't get the ball in the hole on the course. Range players are a dime a dozen.
Just givin' it back!
Video games & simulators... even pinball when I was young never held any attraction for me. Maybe it was because I at them, but I never was driven to try to get any better.
Simulators are fun if you're just goofing around with the guys but don't look at them as a training aid. If I did, I'd never hit anything but #5 woods!
but hey, you never lose a ball, you can hit a killer 5-W from anywhere (as has been stated in the thread) and it's the only golf I ever play while tasting a barley pop. Plus, ours in town is in a brand new bar, within it's own little room with a big screen TV, and a phone that goes out to the bar to place your order..........plus there's no indoor range for 100 miles, and it's -20 degrees right now (and that's without wind chill).......but on the bright side, weather like that means the course is WWIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDEEEE open for the next 3 months or so..
