7 iron distance

I use my 7 from 155-180 depending on the conditions. I have always played my clubs by feel, and never have tried to lock them into a exact yardage.

I hood the club a bit when I want a tad more out of it, and open it up to throw the ball up high.

I'm 6' 2' 1/2 195 lbs , with 36" arm length, length was never a problem with me.

A comfortable 7 iron is 165-170 for me at this point in my game.

In a blade or muscleback (I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere that this is the case) since the weight is positioned directly behind the ball (instead of underneath, like a cavity back with a lower Centre of Gravity) it sends the ball further (and lower, with less spin). This also explains why it is so hard to hit a blade/muscleback, as unless you hit it dead-centre, the shot sh**ks (or at the very least, is very poorly executed).

At least, that's what I read.

I am 5"10 160 lbs. I hit my 7 about 140 yards from the middle of my stance. Which is where I play all my irons unless I need to adjust.

Padraig Harrington says he hits his 34° 7-iron 175 yards, that's about 30 yards further that me . . . I can live with that.

I see. I'd just never heard that, but it might be true.

I don't think pros really have set distances as much as we do, or at least say we do. For instance, watching the Mercedes Open today (watched most of the 1st round on my Tivo-like box, and some of today's round), VJ Singh used a 7 iron from 197 (I believe), of course a bit downwind. Obviously it depends on conditions in your environment, so I'm not quite sure if people here are saying they hit their 7i 180 downwind, upwind, or in no winds.

I'm trying to improve my distance... I hope it comes soon. I noticed someone said distance has never been a problem for them (too lazy to look up the name, apologies). This doesn't give me a very good feeling. If distance was and still is a problem for me (at least in my mind), does that pretty much mean I don't have the knack it takes to get those extra yards?

You worry too much, work on swing mechanics and distance will come. Work/worry about distance and neither swing mechanics or distance will come

33* seems a bit strong for a 7 iron, is that standard for MX 23's?
What is the average loft for modern day 7 irons? I feel that older clubs may be a whole club shorter...

No robertg. You're a beginner, right ? Scroll up and read what shootin4par said and I 'd add RELAX & swing easy. Make solid contact consistently and the distance will come.

I play Mizuno MP=14s, Rifle 6.0 with standard old time Mizuno loft. 152-159 yards is optimum distance for me!

I hit the ball fairly high with a slight fade. Wilson cavity back with steel shaft=150-155 yards. Wilson blade with steel shaft=155-165 yards. Both generally stick like a dart with no roll.

160-170 yds. Usually plan on 165 carry.

I found the question kind of funny...7-iron carry no roll. Unless one is playing on concrete greens, there shouldn't be much roll with a 7-iron.

Of course when I "skull" my 7-iron, I get about 120 carry and 30 yards roll...lol.
