Maybe there is a secret I don't know about...but how does forged blades make you hit the ball further? I played with blades for 6 years and switched to Cleveland TA7 Tour and hit it the same distance. Unless I just don't have a clue, the only way you can hit a different iron further then another iron is if the loft is lower on the iron you're hitting longer?
In a blade or muscleback (I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere that this is the case) since the weight is positioned directly behind the ball (instead of underneath, like a cavity back with a lower Centre of Gravity) it sends the ball further (and lower, with less spin). This also explains why it is so hard to hit a blade/muscleback, as unless you hit it dead-centre, the shot sh**ks (or at the very least, is very poorly executed).

At least, that's what I read.
I see. I'd just never heard that, but it might be true.
Padraig Harrington says he hits his 34° 7-iron 175 yards, that's about 30 yards further that me . . . I can live with that.
I don't think pros really have set distances as much as we do, or at least say we do. For instance, watching the Mercedes Open today (watched most of the 1st round on my Tivo-like box, and some of today's round), VJ Singh used a 7 iron from 197 (I believe), of course a bit downwind. Obviously it depends on conditions in your environment, so I'm not quite sure if people here are saying they hit their 7i 180 downwind, upwind, or in no winds.
I'm trying to improve my distance... I hope it comes soon. I noticed someone said distance has never been a problem for them (too lazy to look up the name, apologies). This doesn't give me a very good feeling. If distance was and still is a problem for me (at least in my mind), does that pretty much mean I don't have the knack it takes to get those extra yards?
My 7 iron is a bit on the strong side - 33*, but I'm more on the short side in regards to distance. I hit it about 140-150 yards. I'm 5'9", 170 lbs.
33* seems a bit strong for a 7 iron, is that standard for MX 23's?
What is the average loft for modern day 7 irons? I feel that older clubs may be a whole club shorter...

No robertg. You're a beginner, right ? Scroll up and read what shootin4par said and I 'd add RELAX & swing easy. Make solid contact consistently and the distance will come.
I hit the ball fairly high with a slight fade. Wilson cavity back with steel shaft=150-155 yards. Wilson blade with steel shaft=155-165 yards. Both generally stick like a dart with no roll.
