My son (a 10 handicapper) gives me a tough time over my choice of ball. He insists that a soft ballata (hope I've spelt it correctly) is the one to use. However I like the feel and sound from a fairly hard ball, particularly when driving and putting. As a somewhat older player now, I feel that I will not get any significant backspin (control) from whatever ball I use. Also we spend a large part of the year playing on greens that are so soft they would stop a cannonball. What do you think? Should I make the effort and spend more money or stay as I am. Cheers all.

If your greens are soft, a softer cover ball won't make that much difference except for intentionally shaping your shots. On soft greens, crisp contact could back up a range ball.
