The joys of winter golf.

Oh the joys of winter golf in the oh so sunny place, St.Andrews.

The weather on saturday began to settle down and it looked like our sunday morning game would go ahead, the skies were clear(ing), the sun was (almost) out, it wasn't raining (or snowing) and the wind had dropped from hurricane to a steady gale. We book our time for the morning.

So Sunday morning at 09.04, there is no wind, no frost, no rain and no snow. I find myself standing on the 1st Tee of the Eden Course ( the Old is closed to golfers sunday). Not a breath of wind and I top the ball about 10 yards and almost make it to the ladies tee box.. Arrrrggg!.. anyway, I still make a bogey so I'm relatively chuffed. Then just as we clear the first green someone notices we're playing golf and the sky opens. Not only are we trying to play through Hail, rain and snow but we're struggling the standup in the wind.

This is true winter links golf, struggling in a gale to get your water proofs on, forget the umbrella, if you could get it up you couldn't hold on to it. Its at times like these that that low grass cutting shot that everyone laughs at all season comes in to its own. We trudge our way out and back dreaming of playing somewhere warm and for some unknown reason, even though we are all freezing, a nice cold beer.

Anyone up for a game on Sunday?

Stu

Great post there Stuart. Unfortunately here the snow covers the ground when winter hits, so I don't get to know the joys of winter golf, but your description makes it sound like a positively jolly time. Hopefully the weather improves just a bit so that your round on Sunday can be a tad more comfortable.

I'm still trying to find out how to hit the ball out of the snow succesfully.

I think I need a black Nike ONE Black. Yeah, that's it!

Winter golf, for the previous weeks before this past week, the temp in coastal carolina was around 78-80, with no clouds in the sky...How's that for winter golf???

Nawww, I'm only braggin because I've never seen weather like this either. Granted I did just move from Alabama, not Mich, but we have our fair share of cold weather there too. I lived in the foothills of the App. mountains and it gets rather chilly there...But in all fairness I'll keep the nice weather tidibts to myself... Real mature, I know...

Man it has to be awesome just to be able to lay eyes on the old course at st andrews! I have thought about making the trip across the pond but I dont fly.. I would take the cruise but I dont have enough vacation. I have heard they are strict about who plays the old course... I have heard that you have to have a certain handicapp..dont know if its true or not?? It gets cold down on the gulf coast but nothing like the Yankee states... Golf was very pleasant today, up until the sun started going down..The temp was falling like crazy....I was in a short sleeve shirt though! Sure is alot of snowbirds around the beach!
