My buddy and I are thinking about bucking up and vacationing here (sans the wife and kids). Play 36 holes three days in a row. Has anyone ever played the Straits, Irish or Blackwolf Run courses? Neither of us has ever been to Wisconsin. Are they worth the big bills? Is the The American Club worth staying at?
OR does anyone have any other ideas for a 5 star course which is off the beaten path? We've played Bandon Dunes before and want to go somewhere that's off sorta random (like Kohler, WI). NO Vegas, no Pinehurst, no Orlando.
Got to play Irish in July of last year during the time they were getting Whistling Straits ready the PGA.Great course with deep large bunkers and thick rough, played with a caddie for $95 during twilight hours. The only thing you have to get used to is the air factor as in thick, use more club than you usually do.There are great courses all around Wisconsin for good prices, playing Irish was a special occasion. The Straits are on my list for next to play.
Hey, if you can get on Whislting Straits play it, regardless of the cost. The Black Wolf Run courses are awesome too. As Sundevil mentioned, there are a lot of great golf courses in Wisconsin.
About an hour drive from Kohler is Lawsonia Golf Courses, another recomendation.
North side of Milwaukee, about 45 minute drive is Brown Deer where the GMO is held, a nice course to play also.

The caddie called it "The Summer Rules",we hit two balls off the first tee,the first to see how far the ball went and the second one to play when I club upped
from a 3W to a 9.5* Driver. We played the tips. The air gets thick in the afternoon and so does the beer
My Boss played it last fall and said it's awesome. Everything is 1st class. If you can afford it go for it. If you head further west I would check out the Brainerd area in Northern Mn. Grandview Lodge has been rated a 5 star destination by Golf Digest and The Classic is ranked one of the top courses in the state.
I got to play both Blackwolf Run courses, and Whistling Straits. The views are stunning, the courses are very difficult, and the atmosphere is first class. Of course, I stayed in a * hotel a few miles away.. no way I could afford the golf AND the American Club accomodations!
If you play the Straits and the Irish, get the caddie. The courses are visually intimidating, so it helps to have someone navigate you through. Also, if you want to enjoy yourself, play the proper set of tees. I played the blue (2nd longest) and it was just the right challenge for me. I can't understand seeing someone play the black tees (the longest), and getting their butt kicked all day.
Just an idea about how they treat golfers there... When you play the River course at Blackwolf Run, you have the option to walk, but they warned me that there is a very long green to tee walk in one spot. I didn't care, and I opted to walk and carry. When I got to that spot on the course, they had someone in a cart, specifically waiting for me, to take me to the next tee. A nice little attention to detail.
If you have the chance, go make that Blackwolf "run"!!

Not too familiar with the WI courses except for the tourney, but another suggestion could be coming to the "lowcountry." Have yall thought about maybe Kiawah Island(5 courses including the Ocean Course) where they played the 91 Ryder Cup? Also, 1 hour and 45 minutes south and you're in Hilton Head. There are some very nice courses here. I'd love to play Whistling, but I just thought I'd offer some more suggestion. Personally, I'd love to go to AZ, and play some of the courses out west!
Living just north of Kohler, I can say that the courses are great. I blay blackwolf yearly and will play the straights this year (avoided it last year because of the PGA). I was at the PGA all seven days and it was incredible. The American Club is worth the money if you like nice hotels (better take your wife if your staying there or you'll here about it). They also have the Inn which is a little cheaper but still very nice. Send me a message if you are seriously coming up this way and I'll give you info on other great courses in the area. Check out "The Bull" which is a Nicholas course that just opened near there (Sheybogan Falls) and the Bogg (former "New Course of the Year").
I've played the Straits, the River, and the Meadows. It's an absolutely great golfing
experience which I highly recommend. The American Club is a fabulous hotel but the
Inn at Woodlake is also very nice and much less expensive.
