I need some help or opinions or what have you. I am not a very long off the tee usually about 210 - 230. So this sets me up for my biggest struggle. Getting on in regulation. It usually takes me three to get on (par fours) And then I two putt three ocationlly I which usually leaves me with bogey. My game flucuates in the 90's but I feel If I could eliminate that 3rd shot my game would improve drastically. I have a older GBB driver that I have used forever. So My question I guess is Has technology improved enough in the past few years that a new driver with like a 460 head would give me the extra distance I am seeking or should I look toward a hybrid like a 3 or 4 heavenwood and consentrait on my lower iron shots or both? I have saw other's on this board with similar distance off the tee so what do you guys do ,or are we in the same boat??
I kind of had the same problem as i didnt hit many GIR but I did have a good short game so my 3rd shot put me close enough to the hole to make par. So for a cheaper solution I would say work on your short game. However, I did find that I did gain yardage on my drives when I went to my Cobra 440 sz.
My short game is all that I have. I mean I take my third shot from within 20 yrds or so and and two putt so thats my thing if I could knock out that third stroke I could change my score alot. I feel my short game is all I have right now..
I would have to say technology has progressed to help your game. What I would suggest you go to a club fitter and take your driver and hit some balls off a launch monitor to see if your currant driver is lauching between 12 and 14 degrees. also check you swing speed and get the right shaft to fit your game the club fitter will also suggest a club with the right degree could be as much as 12 degrees. the right ball will also help your game the launch monitor will also tell you spin rate of the ball so it will give you a good starting point for a ball. the hybrid clubs are great if your having problems with your long irons or woods, they will give you a higher ball flight with more control than a fairway wood.
Not tring to take this thread into a whole different direction but what do you recomend for a new driver? I have looked at the Launcher, but I have always played Callaways and have just always liked that feel, and sound that you can only get from a callaway. The new GBB 454's are out and look pretty sweet.
I had a Callaway Steelhead driver then moved to a Cleveland Launcher 460, im not sure if my swing changed so that it didnt slice or it was the driver. I also noticed at least 20 yards gain of yardage (possibly because of the slice i got rid of). I was hitting 190-200 with my steelhead while w/o the slice on the Launcher I was hitting 210-230 yards. I will be trying out my r7 that i bought next week . Anyways, if you're not consistent with your driver (slices, hooks) I would suggest you get a hybrid and master it. Good short game would also help dramatically, instead of having 1 extra putts on each hole, which totals out to 18 extra strokes (say you keep doing it on every hole), you can master those putts and sink em every time and save 18 strokes. On the pratice green, try to master those 6 footers... I did it and my putting changed dramatically, I rarely do 3 putts and 35% of the time I 1 putt. Anyways, that is what I think, some may not agree but whatever floats your boat.
How long are the holes in your golf course anyways? If youre playing the way back tees, try moving to the middle ones... im hitting 210-230 yards but I am able to shoot low 80s on most courses.

I was wondering this also. How & how far do you hit your fairway woods ? 210-230 should be enough unless you struggle with your FWs & long irons, are playing too much course or are playing from the wrong tees.
How long of a course are you playing I'mstillup? It sounds to me like you are playing from the wrong set of tees for your ability. There's no shame in moving up a set if the course is so long that you can't enjoy the game.

Thats a good point. I have a friend who averages 230-240 off the tee and usually shoots mid to low 80s. We usually play from tees that put the yardage at 6400 to 6600 yards.
As for drivers I like the Cleveland Launcher I just got, but everyone is different. Hit the golf shops and see what they recommend and demo as many as you can.
2 things- one update the driver. i'm not a big guy, but the difference in the trampoline effect of my 580 to every other driver that i've swung is amazing. that extra 10-30 yds helps ALOT.
2-and/or find a couple of clubs, be irons woods hybrids whatever, that you feel completly comfortable with out of the fairway.
and practicing the short game never hurts either...
I would sure recommend going to the R-7 driver, pro series, with 10.5 degrees loft. I went from a Big Berta II to it and just love it. Could have a lot to do with the "Fit-On" Fujikura shaft or the whole set up. Just a great stick.
Here is the yardage on the two courses that I play the most and this is from the white tee's 6017 on one and 6152 or 5897 depending on which 18 you play.
