I am looking to buy a new set of irons and an stuck between the big bertha irons and the x-18 irons. I have been on the callaway site and have researched them both. I am a 30 handicaper and have been playing for a year. I was just looking for some input. Thanks.-Jake
I have played both. i got a better deal on the x-18s so i bought them, but truthfully i should have played both of them more. I went with the x-18's cuz i preferred steel and they were cheaper than the graphite BB's, but i really hit the big berthas a lot better. Don't get me wrong i love my x-18's but the graphite big bertha's felt great too. They are very similar clubs, very forgiving, i think the BB's are a little bigger and have a wider sole tho. Try to demo them, that the only way to know for sure. BTW i'm a 22 handicap.
I play X 18's and I love them, but I agree with what was previously said about them being more for a mid-handicapper. That is not to say that you can't play them even if you have a higher handicap, but you will probably have an easier time with the Big Bertha's and typically (notice my use of typically) they are the cheaper ones.
Go with the Berthas. I just recently moved to X-20's from Big Berthas But only because I felt my game had progressed enough for the move, The Big Berthas are very easy to hit. I would suggest them to anyone just taking up the game with a +25 or above handicap.
I play the X-18's and love them, not tried the BB Irons. But out of all the clubs i tried when buying my Irons, X-18 came up tops for me (Mizuno a close 2nd) so they get the thumbs up from me.
Not to hijack the thread from the OP, but I am also in need of new irons. I dont know my handicap, but I usually score in the low 90's. Would the Big Bertha's also be a good choice for me? Been playing 2 years.

Great site! My first post here, new to golf, started this summe, hooked!
Played twice at course ( 3 par 4s, rest par 3s, scored 95, I know it's bad )
I am using some old BB clubs my friend gave me ( 5i and LW), but I am missing 7 8 9 iron and PW, so I use other brand, steel shaft. I really want a set of iron can last me some good years, ( I am 43, and planing to play 20 more years if i can ) easy to hit, same feelings, I do not have high swing speed., now the questions are:
Should I buy BB instead of X-20 ( I looked at it, like it too )
Sales people told me that X-20 is the clubs that I can grow into when my game gets better, so I do not have change the clubs again 2-3 years down the road.
Should I go with graphite or steel shaft?
Are those I-brid ( 3, 4, 5 hybrid like iron ) better for me than the real hybrid? ( I have 22 and 25 Tommy A hybrids in my bag and I can hit them OK).
I live in Canada, and the set will cost me 800.00 at Golftown. I never bought anything from e-bay or online, but it seems a lot cheaper on line, any advice for me, good websites to buy it?
Appreciate all your help, I really do not know what to buy.

but i really don't buy into the latest greatest thing that all the Big Manufacturers are pushing.
i truthfully can't tell the difference in how i hit my x-18's to x-14's to x-20's. looking back i would have bought used x16's or some other brand instead of new x18's. i will say that the BB's were the easiest to hit irons i have ever hit. since u say you don't have a high swing speed i'd say to go ahead and get them in graphite, and lucky lucky, that link i posted up there are for graphite BB's.
my brother just got them and they are all around solid clubs. the driver is so easy to hit and very forgiving. winning bids seem to be around $280, and for a driver, 2 hybrids and 7 irons, this is the best deal i have seen on clubs. GREAT VALUE. btw they are also graphite shafts.
Those are good deals, especially the Nickent clubs. I am totally green on the E-bay biding, not sure I can get that.
But you certainly answered my question. I think I will buy the BB set, new or used, and keep it until I can not play golf anymore. I might feel okay to spend 800 bucks if that set can serve me good 10 years.
The only thing I do not want do is I have to buy another set of iron in 2-3 years if I buy new BB set.
I play 1-2 times a month in the summer with friends.
Based on the number of times you said you would be playing I suggest strongly to go with the Bertha's and have some fun. They are great clubs! Also check out Callaway Pre-Owned, great customer service and the quality is going to match or even be better than as described. You have a choice from Like New, Very Good, Good and Average. Shipping is only $9.95 and you have a 90 day buy back guarantee as well. Try looking at the 2004 set currently offered at $380.00 for Like New or $289.00 in Good condition for steel shafts 4-10 & W. Lot's of sets to choose from and there is not a real big difference in the 04 set vs. 06 set. Hope this helps, here is a link:
I almost make up my mind. I think I am going to go with 2008 BB Graphite regular shaft, I know I can get better deal buying the pre-owned ones. But thinking I can use this set for 10 years, I do not mind to spend bit more money. Also I think those 3-5 i-bryd will make my game a little easier and more fun. I do not play that often, at least right now due to the busy life.
I will try those clubes again before I buy them . I tried X-20, they are nice clubs too, same price as BB. That's why I am little confused if I should go with X-20, after the salesman told me I might want to change clubs again if I buy BB, since they are so easy to hit, dose not give you any feedback.
But I've heard all good thing about BB, and I used the old ones for now, so I say I will not go wrong with BB.
