I'm 6'4, and was fitted for ping and was to add a 1/2 inch and 2 degrees upright. When I was hitting the demo, it was going high, but the distance was lost, so I was wondering if thats because my swing was adjusted for the regular irons I have.
I was wondering from other tall golfers if getting a 1/2 inch longer shaft and a little bit more upright on the club head helped other tall golfers hit the ball more solidly without losing any distance.
My specs are exactly like yours: Ping green dots, 1/2 longer than standard and 2 degrees upright. I found that by finally getting my irons fitted to me that my distance improved greatly. Whereas before, with the standard clubs I was hitting a 7 iron for example, 155 yards. Now, my 7 iron goes 165-170. I became more accurate with the irons as well. Simp
I'm 6'6" and I play +3/4" and 2 degrees upright. With +3/4 I hit the ball about a half club length further than with standard length. The longer the club, the more distance. The lie (whether flat or upright) won't really impact distance, just accuracy.
You might ask what the LOFT was on the new clubs. They might have been a degree or two weaker than your old set and that would definitely take distance off. It's not a bad thing necessarily, you'll just need to adjust your club selection. Or, buy clubs that are 1/2" long and 2 degrees upright, but have stronger lofts than the set you were trying.
I am not quite as tall as you are im only 6'2 but when i went for my clubs to be fitted they needed to be 1" longer and 3 degrees upright. i think the lenght of the shaft is to do with your wrist to floor distance as for solid contact i am definitely hitting the ball better than b4 most noticably with my lw sw pw.
As davehowe suggested the height is probably due to different lofts on your new clubs.
But it could also be the shafts. what shafts have you got in them now (r, s, xs)? and are they different from your old ones?
I was actually fitted for 1 inch longer and 4 degrees upright, but 1/2 inch and 2 degrees felt fine as well ( I don't think I can bend my ta7's 4 degrees). As for the height, I was hitting the g5 irons so thats probably why they were going so high. I play dgs300 sensicore shafts.
A couple of months ago there was a thread about extra length on clubs, but the kid asking the question was worried about the cost and my answer was not to worry about it too much until he could afford the new clubs. Right after that, I was taking a lesson and my pro fitted me. I am 6'7" and was using standard clubs. I went up 1 3/4 and 4*. Man what a difference. It took a couple of rounds at the range, but I am a lot more comfortable and am hitting my irons straighter and farther. I have always had a high ball flight and still do, but everything else has gotten better. Good luck with the fitted sticks, I am sure they will start working fine for you.
