Consumer Reports Golf Ball Review

Here's an interesting article from Consumer Reports after they tested 25 different brands of golf balls.

From the article:

Quote:
To help you match a ball’s performance to your game, we tested 25 balls for factors every golfer should weigh: how far they travel, how much they spin, how accurately they fly, and how they feel (how hard or soft they seem when you hit, chip, or putt them).
If you're interested, here's the entire article:

It's an interesting article because a machine was used rather than "testers". A machine can't measure finesse and feel, but it accurately measures distance and, to some extent, spin, so it rates balls from a different perspective.

Funny that some of the balls from the hot list by Golf Digest didn't impress CU's machine, like the NXT.

Surprise factor? Who would have thought that the Nike Power Distance Super Soft ($14) would come in at number two, ahead of the Pro V1s, Bridgestone's Tour B330, and the HX balls?

Bottom line, it's hard to go wrong picking balls that rated well on both lists, but for me I'm gonna' give those "best buy" cheap Nikes a try.

Me too. I'm not good enough yet to justify the $40/dozen the top of the line balls are.

a quote from the book..'Hogan', regarding machine testing of golf balls..circa 1953 when Hoga played a Spalding, despite being a staff player for MacGregor

"....Company president Harry Cowan asked his only staff member openly playing a competitor's ball to come to Cincinnati for a conference........................................ ..........

For three days we showed him every test we did on a ball and he never says a word. In the Presidents office Cowan says, "Well , Ben, I guess you can see we're doing everything possible to ensure a quality ball. Take that driving machine, you can't get more advanced than that!"
And Hogan says, "Then, I recommend you enter the f*****g driving machine in the US Open."

A week later, Hogan won the US Open using a Spalding Dot..'

Excellent Hogan story!! Thanks!

Nonetheless, I'm not as skeptical as Hogan and as far as I'm concerned, the Iron Byron is a good indicator.
