$100 custom fit clubs... good deal?

So I went to a small shop today where the owner only had 2 sets of used clubs for sale. The first were some X-16's, but he wanted $275 for them -- which may be a great deal, but out of my price range.

Then he showed me some Vulcans that were a demo club, but I forgot to get the model on them. I kind of wrote them off, because I really wanted a set of X-14's off of eBay, but all of those are closing for about $250.

Anyway, I hit the 9 and the 6 and they felt pretty nice even tho I'd never heard of them. I'm 5'5" and I had asked him if he thought I should get the lie adjusted. He's selling the set for $99 and he said he'd re-grip them for $4 each, and shorten them and adjust the lie for free. I figure that if I took the deal, I could probably upgrade to good grips for a couple bucks more per club and be sitting pretty good -- especially since it was a demo set.

Thoughts? Concerns? Am I insane for not telling him yes on the spot?

I'm just getting back into golf after about 5 years, and I'll have a great job in another year or so, so I'll be able to upgrade to whatever I want at that time... just wondering if this is a great deal to start me back up?

Thanks!

/dak

If you are looking to get different clubs later and haven't played in 5 years then this is definitly a good choice. If the clubs are good then you got them at a good price / if they aren't good, well you can learn your swing with them this year and get a new set next year. The knowledge you will gain from learning these clubs will allow you to know what you want next time your shopping for a set.

Dont wait buy what you can afford. You can upgrade later as money allows. I had to play with $139 set of dunlop clubs. I just ordered newer clubs thanks to a tax loophole. They werent the greatest clubs, but I could still go out and shoot respectable scores. The best thing you can do is spend the bucks and get fitted. Any respectable fitter will charge for it, I consider it necessary, if you buy from them they usually apply the fit charge to the purchase. If you go out and buy elsewhere, consider it money well spent. I went with clone clubs because I cant afford the name brand stuff. But I spent 629 and got a new driver, 3 wood, #4 hybrid, 3-9 pw sw, putter and bag. Some people bash the clone stuff, but unless your on tour I don't think you can tell the difference. Coincidentally its the people that can easily afford the top dollar stuff. I am not one of those people so I went with what I can afford. Just my 2 cents, happy golfing! Just make sure you get something and get out there!

If these 99 dollar clubs really suit your game & you have no intention to upgrade for a while after this then having them properly set up for you regardless of actual value has to be worthwhile.

On the other hand, if you are only going to use these as a stopgap, I might think twice. Though I would ask the question, if you are hitting them well as they are curently set up, do they really need custom fitting. They might be right for you in reality, straight off the peg so to speak. Though you say you are 5'5" so I don't think I'll doubt a proper fitting is in order.

How long do you see yourself owning these clubs, are they going to be a first set, maybe as a reserve set, after you unpgrade later on, that comes out over the winter, or when traveling perhaps; then fitting might be worthwhile, especially if you are getting re-grips anyhow. Especially as decent grips can make or break in using clubs.

Yeah go for the 99 dollar set get them set up for you & enjoy them, as long as the intention is to keep hold of them I don't anything wrong no matter how little of much they cost. In Hindsite there really is no downside to the deal imo.
