Irons

OK, I won't be purchasing these for a few months, but I want to start researching now. I need a set that will meet all these requirements.

-Have to have a little forgiveness. I am a good ballstriker usually but I'm not perfect. For example, I have hit blades and I have 0 interest in them until my skill goes up a little.

-Have to have some workability. I want to be able to play slight draws and slight fades at will. I'm not into the whole "working irons" thing yet, but my goal is to have it down by the end of this summer.

-I want a soft buttery feel when I hit the sweet spot. I HATE irons that have no feel and give you a hard CLANK on good shots.

-Price. This is what's killing me and stopping me from buying irons sooner than this. I want something that I can get in a store for 700 or less(3 or 4-PW). If I absolutely have to, I will resort to Ebay to get a deal.

-Looks. I don't want any huge soled Callaways. I need something that looks somewhat decent.

Do not pass go - do not collect $100 - go directly to ebay. It sounds like your looking for a cavity backed iron with a large sweet spot. For that , I recommend the Taylor Made rac or the wilson staff Di6 both with regular flex graphite shafts - perfect clubs for a mid handicapper(10 to 18). Coincidentally, I just purchased - on ebay - almost new the wilson staff Di6 irons for $190.00. They just arrived today in fact, and they're perfect.

Not exactly...I already have a set of those. I am not looking for a beginner's set of irons. I want some workability so that I can play these for years as my skill increases. My ballstriking with irons is consistent so I am looking for something just short of musclebacks. The only thing near a muscleback I would consider are the MP60s which I have heard great things about.

Cavity backed irons aren't just for beginners though. If you're a casual golfer it's always nice to have the extra forgiveness of the cavity back. You may have a set of beginner clubs, but the ones I suggested aren't beginners clubs. You say you want to be able to play draws and fades - you're gonna want a little more forgiveness if that's one of the things you want to work on. I guess the best I can tell ya is to demo some. I did and what I got from the Di6 is that soft buttery feel you were talking about(i can relate to that description). And it sounded good. I don't know about you but looks are important as well(not just on women)and I think they're good looking too.

I recommend the Innovex RLS's, probably would fit all your criteria. Brilliant value for money. I was pretty much looking for the same criteria as you when I bought mine and I'm really happy. Otherwise, Mizuno MX-23's can be had on Ebay for around $650, or Wilsons Ci6 (not Di6, the Ci6 is more of a mid handicappers club) if you can accept having a 44* PW.

Any other opinions?

What about MP-60s? Would they be forgiving enough for me?

I absolutely love my MX-23's, plenty of forgiveness but it feels like more of a "players" club. I'm a 12-15 handicap and these are very easy to use, after a demo round with the MP-60's I felt they were a bit too demanding for me, I hit them well during that round but I could tell that if I was a bit off I would struggle with the 60's. I also prefer a bit more offset which helps me play the shot shape I prefer (draw). This is the first forged set I've owned and the feel is soft and addictive. I've never been able to intentionally hit fades but the sole on the 23's is nimble enough for me to hit my usual 5-10 foot draw, a higher straight shot and 3/4 swing low shots.

One other club I used to own comes to mind - the Callaway x-14 pro series - you could probably find a set of those used but in good condition for less than $250. The x-14 pro's were very soft on sweetspot hits and they were forgiving as well. They had minimal offset and a fairly narrow sole and a low handicap friend of mine who still plays them can hit any type of shot with them. I remember the x-14 pro's as being very long, it was a great set that I later regretted selling. Maybe some players on this forum can comment on the x-16 and x-18 pro series, I've never played either but if they are similar to the x-14 pro's you might like those as well.
