I was playing the other day and was hitting my driver amazing. But i couldnt help but notice it sounded much different. I play a cobra 440 which is a very loud clangy sounding driver, but its different now, its more of a thud like a titleist. So i was just wondering if this is a sign that the club is "dead". Kind of like how aluminum baseball bats can go dead or whatnot. anyone know what i mean? can this happen?
They won't go dead but can break. I broke 2 1st generation Ping ISI drivers.
These were the ones that had verticle lines on the face. I was playing a round and was getting strange ball flight. I'd catch one on the screws and it would log out there 220??? Then what felt like a perfect hit would hook. Something was wrong.
After the round I went and took a lesson. My pro was watching and was shocked. He said I was hitting them perfect but they were going no where. He sent one of the range attendents to my locker to get my spare driver .
I started to clean of my driver with a towel before putting the headcover on and something snagged. There was a crach in the face at the verticle line and all along where the crown meet the face was a tiny crack. Strange thing was it sounded fine. Ping gave me another one with no questions asked. A month later, split again. When they replaced this one it was the new style face. I still have this driver and it works well to this day.
I don't believe clubs go dead though. never seen it in 40 years.
check the shaft, sometimes it can sound different if the shaft is cracked.. could just be the speed of your swing 2.. sometimes the faster you swing the louder it sounds.. but really if your not losing any distance.. your doing good
over the years, the cobra drivers have a tendency as they get used to become quieter, maybe a breaking in process. both of mine (still have one 350cc) seemed to quiet down after a while, look for cracks, if none, good to go.
