Range Finders

I'm new to this site and there is tons of great info. I was hoping some one could help me out. I'm looking into buying a rnage finder to use on the course but mostly to use on the range to really dial in my distances. My questions would be:
1) What brands? Bushnell, Nikon, etc
2) How small of a target can you get a distance for? such as a single ball on the range.
3) Advnatages or disadvantages of GPS units such as Sky Caddie?

I was about to post a similar topic

I'm curious to how well the cheaper digital rangefinders work. I think they just triangulate using the known pin height instead of using a laser.

Here's an example:

How do these compare to the more expensive laser finders?

I use the Nikon 500G. It works very well and is extremely accurate.

They had cart GPS on two courses we played in Hilton Head. It was showing differences as high as 10-12 yards from the laser which I know is correct.

The reason I like the Nikon is the small size, I can wear the case right on my belt for easy access.

Lasers definitely save time on the course.

You can't shoot a single ball on a range. You shoot the pins, signs, or whatever.

Skycaddie is great on the course but won't do you any good on a range. In order to measure the distance of any particular shot, you'd have to be able to go to the ball you just hit to find your distance. Not sure about laser finders but I doubt they will pick up a single ball on the course. Also, skycaddie is only used to it's full capability if the courses you play on are downloadable from their website, otherwise don't bother.
