What type of putter do most of you guys/gals use, blade or mallet? Is it just preferance? Would you recomend one over the other? Also do you prefer a center shaft or heel shaft? Thanks
I have both. Currently the Blade is in the bag. Last October, I couldn't putt worth a darn, so I got a 2 ball mallet. I liked it a lot but struggled making 3-5 footers so went back to the blade. The mallet really helped me to line up putts, but I have better feel with the blade. But if the Blade starts acting up; no doubt it will go in the corner & the mallet back to first string!
I have a mallet and it's working pretty well for me. I'm a beginning so I'm not sure what's good or not, but I'm impressing people with my putting so it can't be that bad.
Heel Shafted or center shafted. Your putting stroke will answer that question very quickly and easily for you. If you are a straight back and straight thru kind of guy, then I think you will like the center shaft better. If you have an arcing stroke, a heel shafted may feel best. Then you get into issues as to how much toe hang you like, etc. Headweights affect feel as well.
Unfortunately choosing a putter is hard to do without a lot of testing and solid evaluation.
I have a blade. I find that the big honkin' head (on a mallet putter) behind the ball a distraction, and I don't like the extra weight mallet putters seem to have on them. Right now I like a lighter putter.
The difference is in your swing. If you putt with a swing that allows the putter face to release...in other words the toe of the putter tips over or turns over and closes the face right after impact.....get a blade. If you keep the face square thru impact get a mallet.
I seem to bounce back and forth between a mallet, semi mallet and a blade. Right now I am doing very well with a 34 inch Ping G5 B60. I think it will stay in the bag for a while.
I have one of each, a cheap but excellent Top Flight blade, and a Nike Blue Chip mallet.
I putt pretty well with either, but the thing that decides which one I use is the green speed of the course I am playing. If the greens are slow, I'll use the mallet so that I can make a smoother stroke and get more distance/roll. For faster, more challenging greens, I'll pull the blade if I need more feel and control.
IMO, the best way to solve this dispute is to have both a blade and a mallet and switch back and forth. If I'm playing a course that I am new to, I'll take both putters out to the practice green, see which one does the best, and throw the better of the two in the bag for the round and leave the other in the truck.
