Well, the first choice you're going to make is either steel or graphite. Steel is heavier and you won't get the distance you'll get with graphite but you'll get more control. I don't have great distance with my irons but I still prefer steel because of the control I get with it.

Then there's stiff or regular flex. This kind of depends on your swing speed. I'd have to say again that the choice between stiff or regular depends on whether or not you want control or distance.

What kind of shafts on your irons do you play with now? You can decide a lot from your current set and your reasons for purchasing a new one.

Okay, I'm not really an expert on shafts so I found a primer for you that may be of some help.

Hope this helps!

Have your clubs fitted by a professional. Most of the time, this will be included with the cost of the clubs. All your shaft options can be answered.

You said you were looking at a Mizuno iron set. Go to http://www.mizunogolf.com/dealers.nsf/Golf_Fit?OpenView and see if there is an authorized fitter in your area. If not, most courses or retail locations can fit you.

I have played the TX90 steel shaft from TruTemper for about a year and can recommend it.
The shaft is about the same weight as Tour Graphite, but you get the feel of steel.

if i am correct, rifle isn't really a shaft upgrade. it's a shaft brand. then there's true temper which manufactures dynalite, dynamic gold and dynamic golf lite and sensicore. it's tough to recommend a shaft for you without knowing your game. how about this? how far do you hit your typical 9 iron? 7 iron? 5 iron? knowing your iron distances will help us get a guage of your swing speed. then we can recommend stiff/regular flex and a lighter or heavier shaft.

If you hit a 9 iron 140 yards, you would definitely want a stiff steel shaft. I have stiff Dynamic Golds on my irons and I am happy with them. They would probably be good for you.

Most of those shafts are similar if not True Temper TT Lite shafts. Very popular even today and cost approx $6 each. They are very easy to adapt to the individual because of long parallel tip section. I do agree with everyone else, get a fitter to look at your swing and get the right shaft and lie ajustments. You will hit those heads much better and they are worth the effort
