Equipment or Player

How much does golf depend on the equipment rather than the player?

I am not sure exactly, but I know that until you get your swing ironed out it won't matter much which equipment you use.

k i need more info please. i am wondering this because i dont feel like spending a lot on a whole new set and wanted to know how important the equipment was compared to the swing itself. And I do have a consistent swing.

Spend only what you can afford to on new equipment, don't go for the most expensive just because they are within your budget, get what is right for your game. A local pro will help you decide.

Golf depends on the player. The equipment simply helps. Players buy equipment that will help them make the game easier to play.(i.e. cavity back irons instead of blades). Cavity backs are much more forgiving so it makes it easier for me to hit a good shot.
Buy a decent set of clubs - take some lessons and go from there. As for the clubs, you can buy a pretty decent set of used clubs on ebay or your local golf shop relatively inexpensively. In regards as to what you should buy, save that for another post.

There was a post a little while ago where the poster's grandparents settled an argument...grandma felt she could play better with a shiny new set of clubs, grandpa took her worn ladies set and shot in the 60s to prove the clubs were fine...

97% player, 3% clubs. Tiger would waste me if he had off the shelf K mart clubs and I had custom fitted top brand product. He would still have me for breakfast, probably by the same margin.

I would say its more like 90% player and 10% clubs on the high.... high end.. like Tiger... I know that he can not hit every shaft straight nor any iron adjusted to any lie and lenght on the sweet spot all the time..... but he is great non the less. His talent level is out the roof as for mine.... well lets say that I am more on the lines of %80 player and %20 clubs.

If you are a beginner, mid, or expert golfer then you need to make sure your clubs do fit your stature and swing....
What if a guy that is 6'4" questioned this and was told on this forum to just hit whatever clubs he wanted... he needs to get fitted and made sure the length and lie fit his game..... only trick shot artists can hit the sweet spot almost all the time and thats because they have their center of gravity dialed in perfectly and work on it EVERYDAY.....

Why do you think there are options of
Length
Lie
Weight
Swing Weight
Cavity
Blade
Steel
Graphite
Forged
Cast?
.... I could go on and on
its not because these golfers have the ability to hit the sweet spot, work the ball, create perfect impact with anything they have in their hands. It because golfers can play better then their average game with clubs that fit their swing.

There is an article out there from last year with Tiger saying how critical it was for a golfer to get fitted. I will look and see if I can find it.

A good player with bad equipment will ALWAYS win over a bad player with good equipment.

True.........

A good player will make can make up %80 (talent) of golf but a bad player at %50 (talent) could be looking at improving his game another %20 (at most) with clubs.

Look at it this way... Its like adding on Horse Power to the car you already have. A 5.0 Mustang with a standard engine could always beat a maxed out Dodge Aires.

This isn't an answer to the question but it made me think about this. I remember when Karsten Solheim (owner and founder of Ping) was suing the PGA over the big (or little) U-groove controversy it seemed to me that the wrong people were arguing the wrong sides of the case. This was a case were the Professional Golf Association was arguing that tiny (and I do mean TINY) differences in the groove of a golfclubs head had more to do with the playing of golf than the Pros that were using them and Solheim's people were arguing just the opposite. Is there something wrong with that picture or is it just me?

A good golf swing is a good golf swing, even using garbage clubs. Once you learn a good fundimental swing, have clubs built around that swing.

I have my clubs shafted to help remove any errors to the left. I can make them draw, but they don't want to do it. I could hit a more flexible shaft further, but I would bring the left side into play again.

I have specific lofts that I prefer to play, and if I have a new set built in the future (like 8 weeks after the Iron Factory comes back online), the lofts will be adjusted to match the current specs.

I believe firmly in equipment helping a great deal, but without a good fundimental swing, you would be better off spending the money on lessons.
