SW Loft

Is 54 degrees adequate loft for a sandwedge?

I believe it is the lower end of the range that is deemed sand wedge. But just about everyone else uses a 56...

Personally, I like my 56* sandwedge, 54* may be a tad too close angle for me.

Mine is 56* so 54* sounds like it is on the lower degrees of a SW degree range

It depends on the person and the course really. There is alot more choice in a 56 degree wedge, but at the same time a 54 will better fit some peoples distances and perhaps will fit better into their wedge system. At the end of the day you just open the 54 a bit and it becomes 56... heck in bunkers you should be well used to doing that!

Thanks for the info. With that, I think I will choose a 54. Any thoughts on which model to choose? Taylor Made, Titlesti, Cleveland? Others? Chrome, black, othe finish?

Just go demo some to find what you like best, it is all a personal preference.

The standard loft for a sand wedge is 56*. A gap wedge is anywhere from 50* to 54*. And a lob wedge is anywhere from 58* to 64*

I have been playing a Cobra 55/10 bounce for a while and really like it. But with the changing of my iron set I am going to sell it and get a 56 Oil Can to go with the other two I already have. The 55 dosen't fall in too well loftwise. If you aren't already set on one try a volkey oil can. You won't be disapointed.

Clubs are more flexible now....with all of the bounce options on 54s, many are using as a sw in tandem with a 58* for a senario that requires higher loft, sometimes even paired with a GW of around 50*...again, with so many loft and bounce options available in wedges, it is just about getting a set makeup that matches your needs.....

The big factor in use outside the bunker will be the degree of bounce. A typical sandwedge has more bounce because more bounce will keep the club from digging too deeply into turf or sand. But the reason 56* is typical in a sand wedge is that it will give you enough loft, in most cases, to clear the lip of the bunker.

Any experience with Cleveland RTG wedges? I am thinking about the 54 degree. I can just open it up in the sand.
