Buying my first set of clubs

HI Everyone,
I am new to this site, and new to golf.
I have been to the range about 5 times, but haven't played on a course yet.
I was hoping to get some opinions on buying a set of clubs.
I have been using my Dad's Ping Eye 2's and my wifes Tour Eagle SP1 plus's at the range. I of course haven't developed much of a swing yet, but I seem to hit better with my wifes clubs which have graphite shafts. So I am thinking that what I end up going with will have graphite shafts.
Doing alot of reading here on the forum it seems a good list of clubs to look at are:
Mizuno MX-17, 23, or 900's
Taylor Made OS2
Nike Slingshot

Does this seem like a good short list for a beginner? Also any other suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

You might also consider the Adams Idea A1's. I got some last month with regular steel shafts for my first set after reading numerous positive reviews about them. I am amazed at how easy they are to hit and how straight the ball goes. I can't comment on shaping shots with them since I'm just starting and at this point all I want to do is consistently hit the ball straight. Rock Bottom Golf has them with graphite shafts for $249 and steel for $199. Both types of shaft are available in regular and stiff flex. The A2's are out now and the A1's have been discontinued so the price has dropped drastically on the A1's which were selling for about $500 last year ($699 list).

There are lots of good beginner sets out there. I'd suggest going to a pro shop, and hitting several different clubs to see which might be best for you.

Look at Rankmark/GolftestUSA etc... Thats what made me buy my first set, which was the Vulcan Backfires. They are great irons, very forgiving and long.

If you have the money for any of the sets that you listed, they are all great options for beginners. THe most important thing is to get them fitted to you by a clubfitter. It doesnt matter what set you get ultimately, as long as you get them fitted for the 3 L's, Length, Loft and Lie angle. All the clubs you mentioned would help get your ball in the air, and correct most of unintentional side spin. However, if you do not get them properly fitted to you no matter how good you start to swing, the results may not be accurate. Glad to hear you are taking up the game, and I wish you the very best.

Mizuno MX-23s!!! It depends on you though. I chose the 23s over the 17s because they felt slightly better to me, and they were more pleasing to my eye than the 17s. The 900s carry a hefty price tag, and felt no better to man than the other Mizunos. Def. go try out any club you're interested in though, and good luck finding your set!

Thanks for the help.
I will go out and do some looking, and testing this week.
To be honest I dont know what I should be looking for in a club. Since I dont really have much of a swing yet it will be hard to know when a club feels right.
Maybe I will just know when I have the right club for me in my hands.
I almost bought some Mizuno's on ebay tonight, but I held back.
The prices there are very attractive. Especially on used stuff.
I have to make a the decision weather to go to a pro shop and buy new with the guidence of a salesperson's recommendation and fitting, or buying off ebay knowing I am starting off with a set of clubs that get good reviews, but may not necesarily be right for me. Either way until I get control of my swing I dont think I will have the knowledge enough to know what I like and dont like about my clubs.

Thanks again,

Thanks again for the suggestions.
I ended up getting a set of TM Rac OS2's with graphite shaft.
I also picked up a r580xd driver, and r580 3 wood.
I hit a bucket of ball's tonight and was very happy with how I hit the ball.
I had some of the best shots I have hit so far. I also of course had some shots that equaled my worst hits as well. Now that the equipment side of things is over with I really need to try to get some cosistency in my swing.

Thanks again for all the help,

Of the three choices you had asked about these are the ones I would have suggested. They are all around good heads for beginners.

drscott266 made some good comments as well. If you seem to have some problems with them after the "honeymoon" is over make sure you take them to a clubfitter and have them adjusted to your swing.
