I am just getting back into golf and am about to purchase some new clubs. Will the newer hybrid irons (new since I last played 6 years ago) replace the fairway woods. I was just looking at some different options before I started buying clubs that I don't need or will not use. THANKS
Fairway woods are still great, but the truth is, for most golfers the hybrids are better. You'll get comparable distance and loft and because of their shorter shafts you'll get less dispersion from the hybrids. Now not everyone feels this way, but try them out for yourself and go with what works best for you.
so in turn, will the 3 & 4 iron hybrid hit comparable distances to the 3 wood and 5 wood? Like I said, I've not played in a while and I don't want to buy the woods if there's not that much difference in the yardage from the hybrids and woods. THANKS

Comparable distances, higher trajectory for the hybrids.I thought they were going to be the latest Hype when they came out this time (They've been introduced before) but they really make a differance in my game. It's also telling that you see some of the best players in the world using them now.
I just bought a TaylorMade r7. It is supposed to replace my 3 iron. I just love it because you can actually use it in so many ways. I hit it off of the tee on par 4s and 5s instead of a driver or wood and my accuracy is incredible. I normally get about 215-240 yards straight consistently with it. In addition to that, you can hit it out of the rough with it too. It is definitely something to look into purchasing. Hope this helps.
Hybrids replace Irons not Woods. Even if the Degrees appear to be the same the shorter shaft on the Hybrid might make it easier to control but you will be losing distance. I would dump the 3 and 4 Iron out of your set and replace them with Hybrids but keep the 3 and 5 Woods. The hybrids hit great out of the rough but for a good lie I would much rather hit the Woods.
I've got a 16* hybrid that I hit to (almost) 3 wood distance. I get more height, and control with it, so sometimes it's in the bag instead of my 3 wood. Depends on what I feel I'm going to need that day.
I also have 18*, 21*, and 24* hybrids that stay in my bag all the time. They were supposed to replace my 3, 4, & 5 irons. Because there was a big difference in distance compared to my irons, they wound up replacing my 5 wood, 3 iron, and 4 iron.
Yep everyone is differant. I am going to take that 16* Hybrid to the range soon and coax some shots out of it. I just hit my 3 and 5 Woods so well that they are staying in the bag.

That's pretty close to he same for me too.
I've got a 16°, 19° and 23° hybrid that replace my 5w, 3i and 4i repectively. I had been only playing the 16° and 19° hybrids but lately I've been hitting the 23° well and I'm thinking about taking my 4i out of the bag.
I actually hit my 5w well but the 16° hybrid is easier to hit more types of shots with and is about the same length for me.
If someone lost the groove with their 22* 7W and decided a 19* hybrid got that distance back for them, then a hybrid has "replaced" a wood. Also, don't hybrids almost always hit longer than the same loft iron ? So a 27* hybrid is not really a pure replacement for a 5i.
Seems like the process should be more focused on finding the best clubs for the required distances. Might be a blended bag, might be more woods than hybrids, etc.

It appears that a hybrid needs about 3* stronger (less) loft to keep up with the fairway wood club in the distance battle.
