Well, I am completely new to the world of golf. My soon to be father in law just gave me some of his old clubs. I went out and bought a golf bag too. NOw my main question (which i dont want to ask him because i dont wanna make a fool out of myself). What would you guys recommend that I carry in my bag. I know golf balls, tees, towel.... but have no idea what else. I'm a school teacher so i dont have alot of money to spend but I am dedicated to learning the game of golf. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
A water bottle is really useful but before you step foot on the course, you should really work at the range. I would suggest you start with your short irons and only hit every other one. So maybe 6 iron, 8 iron and pitching wedge. Then work on your driver and fairway wood off of the ground. When you begin, there's no real reason to carry a full set of clubs. I also recommend carrying every other club because you probably won't be able to tell much difference between your 7 and 8 iron on a consistent basis.
-Sunscreen
-2 or 3 water bottles (I freeze at least one the night before, two if I'm walking and one cold one out of the fridge. The first time I played golf I got dhydrated and was sick for a week. I've never even fooled with being thirsty out there again. If you get thirsty on the course, you're already close to dehydration)
-some sort of power bar type snack
-repair tool
-extra gloves
-rain gear if a possibility of rain
Typically the lighter you carry the better off you are, especially if you walk the course.
I've been going to the driving range for the past couple of weeks with my friends. Started off not so hot but yesterday was hitting balls 150 - 200 yards. I'm going to be headed to the range today and tomorrow also, aslong as the rain holds off.
I also just started and as yourself was given a set of clubs by my father in law (an excuse to get new ones i guess).
I go to the range 1 or 2 times a week, but my wife is afraid I'll get addicted like her old man
Yeah, it's pretty easy to get addicted. First it starts with the range. Then you go to the course. Next thing you know it, you're trying to break 100, then 90, then 80. Then you're trying to see how many birdies you can get in one round. Then if you can eagle. Now, I'm working on getting a hole in one. It never ends!

I have helped many many beginners. The best advice I can give you is to invest in lessons now.
$150 spent over a period of weeks and months on a series of 3-4 lessons can be the very best gift you can give to yourself in your quest to learn the greatest game in the world.
Go to your local courses and ask about instructors. Tell them you are a brand new beginner and want a "short series" of lessons over a few weeks. They will give you a better deal than just one. Then, you take lesson one, hit the range 2x a week and play 1-2x week - take another lesson. Repeat cycle.
You have a chance to learn to play the game properly - before you get bad habits that are so tough to break...
you should think about investing in a cart as well, they're fairly inexpensive and save yourself from having to carry all your clubs and accessories.
Make sure you bring sunscreen, it may be hassle to have to put on but it'll reduce the chance of skin cancer, and not to mention painful sunburns
