Graphite v. Steel shafts on Irons

I mentioned this in my other thread....but this is the information i cant find anywhere.

whats the advantages and disadvantages of each?

does steel last longer? does one or the other give more distance or control.

im looking to buy a set of irons and dont even know what kind of shaft to go with.

any help is greatly appreciated.

At 24 and avg health male you need steel. First they are cheaper, control is better and they are heavier.....again better control. Distance is usually not an issue with irons at your age. Irons are about control. Distance is for your driver and with a driver graphite is a must.

I agree with Scott1s. Definitely go with steel on you irons for the control. Now it's a matter of picking the right flex.

Well, people that play a softer flex than what their swing speed dictates may find that they are hooking the ball alot.

Generally, if you hit a 7-iron more than 150 most of the time, you probably need a stiffer shaft than a regular. But to be sure, it's best to get a fitting.

Didn't one of our GR sponsors (I think Kevin from Innovex) do some real world tests on the effects of shaft flex? I think he found that it was actually safer to go with slightly more flex than with something that might be too stiff. I am not sure, but it might be worth referencing.

I just don't like people to pick the flex based on a male ego thing. Using a regular flex club doesn't mean you're any less of a man, just that you're a regular man.
