'soft shell' jacket for golf

Given we have many North American members who have snow for a good portion of the year, I thought I might ask a question of you.

I have a mountain hardwear alchemy soft shell jacket, I use it endlessly for casual wearing and I am thinking of getting another similar jacket. My only problem with this one is that it is not really loose enough to play golf in. Now keep in mind I am from ireland, so we are accustomed to a fair bit of rain! So I was thinking that instead of getting another 'casual' soft shell AND one of those (ridiculously expensive) golf water proofs, I could kill two birds with a looser fitting water proof soft shell (mountain hardwear synchro comes to mind). Has anyone taken this approach or are you all using dedicated golfing waterproofs?

Adam

A light weight Goretex shell garment should work well with a fleece inner jacket/sweater or pullover. I wear a Sunmountain goretex zipup jacket over a fleece pullover myself on chilly/wet/windy days and it's great. As long as it fits comfortably and doesn't restrict your body movement, go for it.

If goretex not typically quite 'noisy'? I have several garments and they certainly would be too noisy for golfing in.... in contrast my current soft shell is silent...

Noisy goretex?.... ...I have not gotten to the point where I put a decibel meter on my golfing clothes, but my Sun Mountain Goretex jacket is as soft as a cotton windbreaker I have, and no noisier. I have seen some lightweight GoreTex shells that might "rustle" a bit, but I don't really "listen" to golf clothes. Goretex will keep you dry, warm and snug in a howling blizzard or hurricane. When the weather degenerates to blowing rain enough to need it, who cares if it makes a bit of "noise"? By that point, the wind and rain are so noisy, that "noisy" golf attire would be the least of your worries I would think.

I know that my heavy waterproof goretex jacket is big bulky and definitely noisy! Not at all golf material! I'll have to look out for this sun mountain jacket... at least find what material it is (goretex of course comes in many guises).

Thanks

My Sun Mountain jacket is labeled "Goretex", but the outer material is a very soft nylon and it doesn't rustle. It is super water proof, but cut fully for easy movement. I think I paid about a hundred bucks for it. Maybe a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for, I think. It packs down to a small package too. I just roll it up and keep it in my golf bag. It's super light and totally windproof as well. I bought it at a golf pro shop. Everything Sun Mountain makes that I have seen is of super quality. I even chose a Sun Mountain combo pull cart/riding cart bag. It seemed to be the best made of all the dozens of bags I looked at. I think they make some really nice gear.
