Thinking of buying a new wedge. What do you think I will get more use from? I have only used a PW before and just adjusted my swing but I would really like to have something that I can take a stronger swing when closer to the green. Also, what degree loft?
I like my 60* lob wedge. It's a Cleveland Tour Action 588. It's really handy around the greens and on shorter approach shots because you can use it to stop the ball where it lands. This is handy for tight pin positions or sloping greens. With higher lofts such as the 60* i find i can give the ball a nice solid swing instead of having to use 50% with a pitching wedge which can sometimes be difficult.
I haven't had much experience with gap wedges though but i'd reccomend a lob wedge(60*+).
Yes, as said above, a 56º sandwedge will do the trick if you are looking for one more wedge.
I use a gap wedge (52º) that has some (10º) bounce and a 58º wedge that also has 10º bounce.
I use both of these wedges from the sand or anywhere else.
My friend uses a 56º SOLUS wedge that he likes a lot, from most lies.
The one factor I think I would look at even more so than loft is the amount of bounce you have on your current PW. If it's fairly low bounce, like most PW, I would recommend whatever wedge to get, whether it be a GW or SW, have a different amount of bounce than your PW.
The first additional wedge I acquired was a 56* SW.
Now my bag has 4 wedges:
---Wilson Fat Shaft PW (graphite shaft), which I think has a loft of 46*
---older PW (steel shaft) with a loft of 48*, I believe
---51* gap wedge (Cleveland Tour Action Reg.588)
---56* SW (Cleveland Tour Action Reg.588)
Possibly it's crazy to carry that many wedges, but they all go different distances. When I find myself 65 to 105 yards short of the green (which is often), I've got a club that'll work with a full or nearly full swing.
I'm working on a partial-swing SW to cover the 50+10-yard range. Could always toss my 60* lob wedge into the bag, I guess....

48*/9* pitch and 58*/12* sand
also when I get around to it, I'll get my sand wedge cut about an inch, to 34.5"
when I take a full swing, i don't want it to go too far, just high, straight, and sit.
I also use my sand for soft pitches aroun' the greens when chipping's not the answer.
Challenge is in not over-shooting greens with my pitch wedge that'll fly 120~130 yards if I'm not careful
my 60* lob wedge with low 6* bounce digs too much -- i've actually swung under the ball completely with my lob wedge on soft turf and have the ball move inches, yup, I'm a steeper -- and plays too erratic for me...I'd rather concentrate on finessing one wedge around the greens, my sand w.

I've got a 52 and 56 degree wedges. I threw the 60 degree out.
Although it seems as though terms are changing nowdays. Used to a 52 was a gap wedge, 56 was sand, and 60 was lob or any degree around those were referred to as the same. In different magazines here lately, you'll notice that if it gives a rundown of tour players distances with each club, a 52 (or any loft around there) is considered a "SW", and then 56 and above is a "LW".
I have a PW and a SW, and in the past month I can not count the times I would have giving just about anything for a Gap Wedge. I can only think of once I wished I had a Lob Wedge.
seems to me that over the past few years, lofts have been getting stronger, so todays pitching wedge(47-48*) was yesterdays 9 iron. if the number of clubs in your bag is an issue, toss the 3 iron and get the gap(old pw) and the sand(56*). remember that the short clubs are the scoring clubs.
