Bounce is the angle of the sole of the wedge, from back to front. A higher bounce will help prevent the club digging in when hitting from sand or deep rough, and a lower bounce makes it easier to get under the ball when hitting from a tight lie.

In general, a SW would typically have a higher bounce, but most of the better wedges are available in a variety of loft and bounce configurations to suit different playing styles.

My Cleveland 588 gap wedge has 6 degrees of bounce; the 56 sand wedge has 14 degrees of bounce and my 60 lob has 8 degrees. The extra bounce on the sand wedge really helps in the soft sand bunkers here in south Florida. If I were playing harder sand, I might be using a sand wedge with maybe only 10 degrees of bounce.
