A few beginner questions.

I have a patchwork set of clubs that i have been playing about weekly with this summer. I carry driver, 3w, 5w, 3-9 pw sw lb, putter. I am thinking that irons are the place to upgrade my equipment first (along with the lessons i will be starting next month). What sets would you guys recommend?
It also seems strange to me that a putter should not be so expensive. Is a quaility putter a good value for the money spent? What club is going to save the most shots? I am definitely considering a hybrid as well. Any recomendations?

Every club in your bag will save you shots. The putter, probably the most if you can get good with one. Upgrading to modern irons has lower my score more than any other equipment change I have made.

Checkout these irons, if I was in the market for a new set (CHEAP) this would be the ones I would buy. Good Irons and an amazing price on them.

Well the great thing is you have more selection than you know what to do with. And to answer you question, yes a good putter will do a lot for your game. Try and remember the quickest way to drop or add strokes to your game is on the green. If you go from 3 putting to 1-2 putting every green, that is a minimum of 18 strokes dropped off the scorecard (genius math wizard here I know). Now driver will ever do that for you. Your short game will come second in terms of giving you those opportunities for 2 putts, so that should be your second area to concentrate most of your time. Then you move to 100 yards and in, 150 and in, 200 yards and in, etc, etc. The Adams equipment you cannot go wrong with.

If you're looking at irons for game improvement you can't go past the Cleveland Launchers. Make sure you check them out.

I would upgrade you irons first. Go hit a bunch and then come back when you have narrowed down your choice for advise and some reviews here at GR.

Everybody has an opinion, but the truth is that if you've got a good swing, any club will work. Whatever clubs you decide to go with, you need to get fitted!!!!

You need to know if you are going to use stiff or regular shafts. This is determined by your clubhead speed.

You need to know if you need the lie on your club to be adjusted. This is called upright. What it means is that on your swing, the head needs to be brushing the ground flat. But if your stance/ swing is off, you may need the head to be bent upright.

Once you got that figured out, I recommend TOUR EDGE!!!
They are dirt cheap. $300 dollars for 3-pw.

As for the putter. IT ISN'T THE PUTTER !!!! IT IS THE PUTTEE!!!! That is you. Getting lessons with a good pro is the smartest move you can make.
